Dear Bridget Marmion,

I believe it is possible we may be related through marriage lines, initially through Dunshaughlin parish records

One of my ancestors was William Dowdall (1799-1856), married to Ellen Murtha 15 December 1832. Their children:-

Margaret (15 March 1838); James (my great-grandfather); Francis (14 January 1850); and John (27 June 1851).

William Dowdall's father James Dowdal - who (I think?) died 2 June 1816/7 in Pelletstown -  had an older son Christopher.

I think Christopher Dowdall married Biddy Mullady 20 July 1822 and they had the following children baptised:-

Patrick (13 December 1826); William (4 December 1828); Mary? (12 January 1831); Stephen (26 March 1832); Catherine (30 October 1833); Ellan (11 October 1835);and Christopher (25 February 1840).

Ellen Dowdall married a James Foy in August 1857 but became widowed and then married John Marmion in 1863 or 1864.

Their children: William (5 November 1865); James (3 October 1867); Bridget (13 July 1870); and Ellen (23 February 1873).

These are the most up-to-date parish records I can find but there is also a Hannah Dowdall married to Thomas Marmion on 17 February 1868. They are both shown as the witnesses at the marriage of John Marmion and Ellen Dowdall in 1863/4.

I have obtained more recent genealogical information from a Denise Dowdall at Historyeye.ie in Dublin.

However, I would like to know if you are related to John Marmion and/or Thomas Marmion before going into more detail?

My main interest is in tracing evidence of Dowdall family history but it does seem interlinked with Marmion family history.

I travel to Dublin on 21st June and will be staying until 25th June, during which time I would like to meet family members.

Would it be possible to meet up with you to possibly gain further family history information from you?

I can be emailed on dowdle.vm@virginmedia.com.

With all best wishes,

John Dowdle

  • Hi Roger,

I was not so much adding a comment as trying to communicate with Bridget Marmion directly.

I was trying to add my statement to Derrypatrick (County Meath) Message Board.

    The link is https://irelandxo.com/ireland/meath/derrypatrick-meath.

Are you able to get my message sent on to Bridget Marmion?

I will be grateful if you will kindly arrange this.

    Thank you,

    John Dowdle

Bridget Marmion was the gr-gr grandmother of the person who posted the 2017 message. I have added your comment to the 2017 message thread. If the posted has the same e-mail address that he used in 2017, he will get a notification of the new comment.

  • Roger,

I wonder if this is the same Bridget Marmion the original poster was interested in?

  • Roger,

I am flying into Dublin Airport on Tuesday 21 June and will be returning back to Luton Airport on Saturday 25 June.

Ultimately, I will stay with my sister-in-law in Shankill.

However, it would be really good if I could meet up with a local history volunteer - in Dunshaughlin? - at the very start.

If possible, I would like to stay in the Dunshaughlin area for 2 or 3 days to carry out family history research.

In particular, I would like to meet up with individuals who can tell me something about the early history of my great grandfather James Dowdall, who - strangely - is shown as having been baptised THREE times in less than ONE year in the Dunshaughlin/Culmullin baptismal records: on 9 July 1839, 10 September 1839 and 5 July 1840.

It would be really useful to find someone locally who can explain how this happened. The registered parents are the same.

It would also be useful to know if anyone has a record of James Dowdall marrying locally and how, when and why he (and his wife?) ended up moving to England in (I am guessing) the 1860s?

Can you suggest someone I could contact regarding staying in Dunshaughlin for 2 or 3 days, who might be able to assist me in my efforts to find out more about my great grandfather's life in Ireland?

    Thank you,

    John Dowdle
