About twenty + years ago, my husband's uncle started doing the Doyle geneaology. I got interested and helped. Uncle Pat died in 2003, so I've taken over, working primarily on Ancestry.com. When Owen Doyle came to the US escaping the Potato Famine, he came with his young bride, Julia O'Rourke and a small baby, James, that had been born in Ireland. While we were able to construct the entire family tree here in the US, all forms filled out by the family, when asking for place of origin, were filled in with Ireland only. Without the county, we were lost trying to find the family Irish roots.

It took over two decades, but I recently found Owen's christening document on Ancestry.com showing him having been baptised in Kilbeg, Meath.

So Owen was born in 1820, Julia in 1828 and James in 1850. The family settled in Columbus, Ohio, USA, sometime between 1850 and 1852. Owen is buried in the large Catholic cemetery on the south side of the city. They went on to have four more children and brought further family members to Columbus, all living on the same street (which no longer exists).

We would love to find relatives in the Kilbeg area. If you know anything, please contact me. It also looks like the grandparents were tied to Swineford.

  • Owen Doyle Family:

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked Roots Ireland and could not find any of the Doyle family records you mentioned in Kilbeg RC parish in Co. Meath. I then expanded the search to all of Ireland and found a family in St. Mullin's parish in Co. Carlow. St. Mullin's is a civil parish and RC parish in the southern tip of Co. Carlow close to the Kilkenny and Wexford borders. Owen Doyle and Judith Rorke/Rourke were married  in May 1847, had their first child Andrew in October 1847, James was next in  October 1949 and finally another Andrew was born in May 1852. (Likely the first Andrew died young). The family likely emigrated in 1853?

Please review the transcriptions below and let me know if you think the records pertain  to your ancestors.

    Roger McDonnell.
