Hello! I am an ancestor of the Shadwells from Kiltale, Meath. My great grandfather, Lawrence Shadwell immigrated to the US (and married Mary Ann Cooney, also of Meath) in the late 1800s. If anyone is related or knows how I can connect with any Shadwells or Cooneys in the area, please let me know, thanks!!

Edit: they were my great great grandparents

The 1911 census for Co. Meath only showed one Shadwell-- Alice who was unmarried and living with her married sister Elizabeth Daly in Gibraltar townland in Kiltale civil parish. Unlikely that there would be any Shadwells in the area now.

    http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Meath/Kilmessan/Gibraltar/…

Going back, the 1854 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings for Co. Meath only showed a James and John Shadwell living also in Gibraltar. Likely one of the two was the father of Alice and Elizabeth.

I did locate an 1852 baptismal record for an Alice Shadwell. See below. Also, a record for Elizabeth in 1856. There were seven other siblings Thomas 1849 Margaret 1852 James 1854 John 1857 Mary 1859 Patrick 1862 Bridget 1864

Not sure who Lawrence connection was.

  • Wow!! Thank you!! I am thinking maybe Thomas is Lawrence because that is his middle name and I have him down as being born in 1850, but perhaps it was 1849 instead. And I did have Alice, Elizabeth, Patrick, and Bridget as siblings... However, I also have a Thomas in the siblings list as well.... but I have been having an itching suspicion that Thomas was actually Lawrence this whole time.....

Attached is a picture I have of Lawrence. I have 4 U.S. federal census sources for him, but no vital records....

Hmmm.... As usual, the answers lead to more questions! THANK YOU AGAIN! I will dig deeper..

  • I looked up "Culmullin" and stumbled upon this website.... Do you think it could be possible that they attended the school mentioned on this page? http://www.dunshaughlin-culmullenparish.ie/culmullen-hall/

Here is the excerpt, but the link above is for context:

"A fresh application was made in 1833; a grant of £50 was forthcoming and the school was finally started in September 1835. The building is still in use today and is known as Culmullen Hall. "

Thank you again so, so much!

  • I have also found Shadwell's in the 1901/1911 census in Co. KILDARE..... Do you think it would be safe to assume a relation? (See attached screenshot)

It seems like there were really not many Shadwells in Ireland?! I just looked up the history of the name and it is ENGLISH... so I wonder if and when these Shadwells would have come over to Ireland....

"Shadwell Family History. English: habitational name from any of the places so called, in London, Norfolk, and West Yorkshire. The first is named from Old English sceald 'shallow' + well(a) 'spring', 'stream', the latter two from scead 'boundary' + well(a)."

and then this page (which I know is a retail website selling info about surnames, but it lists sources)
    https://www.houseofnames.com/shadwell-family-crest

    Hmm.. :)

There is a good possibility that your Shadwells attended the Culmullen school. There may be a connection with the Maynooth Kildare Shadwell family but not sure how you can prove it.

Please consider adding one or more of your ancestors to our XO Chronicles site.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

  • I have a great deal of information regarding my Shadwells from Loughrea East Galway, from Cork and Ennis, Clare. I have reason to believe that the Rev. John Shadwell, in Co. Meath (1721) may also be related. My great grandfather, Capt. George Ingham, RN married Sarah Shadwell at Passage, Waterford (Sarah was the dau. of Thomas Shadwell, M.D. of Loughrea) After she died, he married her sister, Catherine, and they lived  in Castleconnell, Limerick (where he died). Cather then married Daniel MacNevin (of Gort), Solicitor for the great Daniel O'Connell and father of the Young Ireland leader, Thomas.
