I have a connundrum that maybe someone can help me solve.  my 3rd great grandfather John Leddy and his wife Bridget Masterson immigrated to the US in 1848 with their children Bridget, Ann, Mary & Margaret (twins), Patrick.  Their older sons John and Thomas had already immgrated to the US at an earlier date.  They settled in Delaware County, NY.  My problem is that found son John born to Leddy & Masterson, but the cannot find marriage or the other children under the name "Leddy" or variations thereof such as Leddys, Leedy, Leady, Ledy, in the oldcastle parish records.  I CAN find the marriage record and baptisms of other children with the correct dates under the name "Ledwidge."  I have been told that Leddy and Ledwidge are two completely different names and not a variants of one (Leddy).  Tithe applotment shows John Leddys two farms in fennor upper. And Leddys appear in the valuation books.

Could it possible they are one and the same family?  I have looked for my leddy family in another parishes and counties to no avail.

  • Emerald Ancestors at https://www.emeraldancestors.com/family-surname?surname=Leddy notes many variations of the Leddy name, including Ledwidge. Your hunch is correct.

  • Thank you patricia and tommyl.  Im assuming that even though the emerald isle data is for northern ireland it is safe to assume that it is applicable also to Co. Meath.  With this info, im going to push on and accept that my Leddys and Ledwidges are the same family and try to find further evidence of the family in the oldcastle area.  I will also do some searches with the alternate spelling from the emeraldisle web site.  I appreciate your input on my query.

tommyl ... i will also check out the leddys in dromone.. leave no leaf unturned.. thank you!
