Hello!

I'm hoping to find any information about my 3rd GreatGrandpa, Patrick Risban who left Ireland from Liverpool and arrived in Boston, MA  8/5/1840, his age is listed as "26". He was traveling with James (30) and Jane (27) Risban. The relationship to Patrick is unknown. He was possibly from Trim in Co. Meath. The spellings of his name vary -Rispin, Risband, Risbon.  We had plans to visit The Cottages near Bettystown this past May and then COVID shut down the world. We're already booked there for next May and I hope to be able to walk where my ancestors walked. It's very exciting..  Thank you! Deena from Florida USA

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

It appears from the subscription site Roots Ireland that the surname was Rispin in Co. Meath. There is a James Rispin baptized February 12 1808 in Kildalkey RC parish with father Peter and mother Catherine Reilly. The only Patrick record I can find was in 1799 also in Kildalkey with father James and mother Elizabeth Cormick. After 1799 the next Patrick Rispin record is in 1832.

It should be noted that if your ancestors were from Trim that the RC baptismal records for the parish do not start until 1829 which might explain why I'm not locating a baptismal record for Patrick.

I checked and there are no other Rispin messages on our message board and we go back to 2013.

You may want to add Patrick's emigration story to our XO Chronicles page  https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

  • HI Deena & Roger, just to clarify that Kildalky is near Trim but Bettystown is near Drogheda on the coast, about 25 or more miles to the east of Kildalky. Kildalky is a lovely rural spot, mainly farmland. Just in case Deena thinks they are close.

As a matter of interest to me anyway, I always wondered how Bettystown got its name, what famous Betty lived there, however it is from the Gaelic Betaghs which is for a victualler or a butcher, as in food supplies.

    Good Luck
