Looking for information on my Tobin roots in County Meath, possibly in Skreen, as this is one of the areas within Meath that show in Griffith's both Tobin's, Sherry's and Mcdermott names.

My great grandfather was Edward Tobin born 1828 - 1830 in County Meath from what our Family tradition tells us. He married Alice Sherry in 1862 in Waukegan, Illinois, USA. They lived close to the McDermott's suggesting they may have known each other in Ireland.

Edward was to have had 4 or 5 brothers who came with him to the USA and have left 2 sisters and parents in Ireland.

The Sherry family arrived in the USA in 1849, I do not have a record for the Tobin's or McDermott's.

I will appreciate any information that may help in my search for these families, especially the Tobin's and Sherry's.

I looked at the Roots Ireland indexes and did not find a baptismal record for Edward Tobin for a 10 year period around 1828. There are a good number of Co. Meath parishes which do not have records back to 1828. I did find an 1834 baptismal record for a Alicia Sherry in the Moynalvy RC church. Moynalvy is a parish in south Co. Meath. The following civil parishes correspond to Moynalvy: Kiltale, Kilmore, Galtrim and Derrypatrick. The father's name was Mathew but I could not determine the mother's name.

Later this summer the National Library of Ireland plans to place all RC parish registers online for free searching.

  • Roger,

Thank you for sharing the information, greatly appreciated. We have the ship arrival record and it shows the parents as a John b1804 and Anne Sherry b1807. They arrived in the US on the Alice Frazier on 14 Mar 1849.

The Sherry family was large with children shown in the ship’s record as: Alice (19), Elsa (17), Mary Anne (15), Frances (13), John (7), Susan ((3), James (5) and Bridget (6 months). One record indicated they left Ireland via Belfast.  Alice’s age in the ship record is of question in that other records place her birth at 1835.

This Sherry family settled initially in Chicago, Illinois, and we found other Sherry families there as well, likely cousins, etc. The Alicia you found could be of one of these families and I believe there was another Sherry family living in Waukegan in 1862, one being a Felix Sherry but thus far I haven’t been able to tie him to a specific family.

Regarding Edward, his birth date of 1828 was calculated from his obituary. I believe he was illiterate as he made his mark on his testamentary (will) so we assume he could not read/write to any great degree. Once settled in Waukegan, Illinois, he farmed a small plot and drove a wagon for a living. One can assume his family in Ireland was likely farmers as well. In any case we only have tradition that puts his birth as County Meath.  The Edward name has carried to the present generation.

This might suggest it was also done in Ireland.

Again, thank you for the information you were able to find. Finding my Tobin’s in Ireland has proven quite challenging, which is why I appreciate your taking the time to help,.  If you find any information that you believe would help in my search I will appreciate your passing it on.
