Four of Christopher and Mary's (Gilmer) RICKARD's children (Patrick, Michael, Thomas and Catherine) came out to New Zealand in the 1860's/70's. Some family buried at Scurlogstown cemetery. Looking for information about this family and any other descendants who may be living in Ireland or Australia..

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Have you tried looking in church records for information on the family?
Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Trim parish, follow this link:
Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so any births, deaths or marriages in the family after this date would be recorded in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
You could also check for record of the family in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Have you tried looking in the 1901/1911 census records to see if there are any relatives still in the area at the time? These can give lots of useful information: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ .
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
Genealogy links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/meath/index.html
Familysearch: www.familysearch.org
Meath Library : http://www.meath.ie/Community/Libraries/LocalStudies/
You could also try contacting Meath Heritage Centre for assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email: meathhc@iol.ie
I hope that some of this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,

Hi,
I'm a Rickard descended from the Coolronan branch of Lukes. My research has shown that Christopher and Mary's family is as follows:
Christopher & Mary Gilbert (Gilmer/Gibne/Gilmorey):
M – 08 Jan 1833
Children:
Thos 22 Jan 1834
Edw 15 Dec 1835
Chrisr 04 Oct 1840
Cathe 18 Jun 1843
Anne 15 Feb 1845 [Ballivor]
John 12 Jan 1846
John 12 Jun 1847
You should find all these entries on the Trim parish page on the NLI archive at https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0963
You will find a transcript of the headstones in Scurlogstown here https://meathhistoryhub.ie/scurlogstown-trim/ I'm currently looking into which Thomas Rickard is buried in this graveyard (there's a few of them!)

Hi Laoch,
I see on Ancestry that you have researched numerous branches of the Rickard family in Ireland. I was wondering if you have come across my family. Parents: Thomas Rickard and Ann Keenan. Children: Mary, b abt 1834, Ann, b abt 1836 and Thomas, b abt 1838. Mary married Benjamin Wilson and settled in Buffalo, NY. After his death, she married his brother John. Ann and Thomas immigrated in the mid-1850s and also settled in Buffalo. Any information you might have on this family would be much appreciated.
Regards,

Hi Larry,
I don't seem to have them on my list. Where do you think they came from? Have you any specific location in Ireland where they originated? Any other information you can give me might help me in narrowing down who they are.

No, sadly I have no information on where in Ireland they came from, but I am currently going through all their children's death certificates and obits to see if there are any clues.

I just remembered: I am a DNA match with a number of people on Ancestry who claim descendancy from Peter Rickard (1807-1886) and Ellen Allen of Kilkenny West, County Westmeath. Not sure how they may be related.

I do have Peter and Ellen (aka Mary) Allen's family. They were from Tubberclair in Co. Westmeath. Their family is:
Bridt 24 Mar 1839 [sp. Patk Molloy] (d. 06 Nov 1929)
John 23 Jun 1842 (d. 22 Jan 1922)
Elizb 25 Jun 1844 (sp. Edw Rickard)
Jane 05 May 1847
Willm 15 Apr 1851 [sp. Judith Molloy]
Julia 23 Dec 1853
Mary 16 Mar 1859 [sp. Bridt Molloy]
Their daughters married as follows:
Jane and Michael Ganley: M – 15 Jun 1872 [witness: Jane Molloy]
Mary and James Allen: M – 28 Jul 1879
Unfortunately there's no Thomas and Ann Keenan there. I've just copped you've sent me a message on Ancestry. I'll go there now and respond to you on that!

Dear Laoch
Can I ask you something about the Meath Rickards? Here or on Ancestry?

Absolutely. Ask away. I use the same username on Ancestry, so if you prefer there, that's perfectly fine too!
