Specifically, checking for Bernard McCoy (1808-1866), who emigrated to the United States in the 1850's or early1860's. The family settled in the River Point section of West Warwick, RI, which was a cotton textile center. Many people from Monaghan settled in Rhode Island, probably because of their linen industry background. First wife of Bernard was Rose (she may have died in Ireland); second wife Mary (1818-1889). Both are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in West Warwick, RI and the parish name spelled "Aughnamullen, Co. Monaghan" is on their tombstones. Bernard's son Patrick McCoy b. March 1847 (mother: Rose), who is my great-grandfather, emigrated in 1864, served in the Union Army in a Massachusetts artillery battery in the last days of the Civil War, and later settled in Pawtucket, RI (c 1873) with his McCormick cousins. I'm attempting to learn more about Bernard, Rose and Mary and their family while in Ireland, and identify any living relatives who may be able to shed light on circumstances in Ireland at that time.

    John:

The 1861 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Agnamullen parish shows three McCoy entries. You mentioned that Bernard had left before 1861 but Patrick did not come over until 1864. Possibly he was living with one of the three households listed on Griffiths.

RC records for this parish are in two locations. One church Aghanullen East has records starting in 1857 which is too late. The other church, Agnamullen West has records starting in 1841, however, they are not currently available on Roots Ireland.

I also looked on the Tithe Applotment listings www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie and there was one McCoy in Agnamullen parish --a James in Derryroosk townland.
