I am looking for any McMahans that might still be in the area.  My great-grandfather Michael Daly was born 1869 to Patrick Daly(b. around 1845) and Ann McMahan (b. around 1844) was born in Cooltrim.  I have found his baptism record for the Diocese of Clogher Aughnamullen West.  I posted separately recently looking for info on the Dalys specifically.  I have taken Elwyn's suggestion and sent for the birth certificate and that of his brother Patrick.  It appears that there were several McMahans in the area. There are at least two McMahan babies on the same page in the parish register and Michael's baptism sponsors were Patrick and Bridget McMahan.   I will be in the area in April.  I am travelling with my mother, my sister, two aunts and two cousins and we would love to connect with any locals that could tell us a bit about the place.  We would most likely be there around April 17th/18th.

I hope to hear from someone!

  • Hi Annette

Given that you are almost ready to travel your research time is fairly limited at this point. As a long shot you could call into the Post Office in Ballybay and ask for information there on any McMahons living locally. Alternatively Monaghan County Library might be able to provide a much more local focus as they sometimes host heritage groups and may have a local contact you could use:

  • Clare,

Thank you very much.  Is it possible to tell from the marriage record for Patrick Daly and Ann McMahan that I attached in my post above, what church they were married at?  If nothing else, we would like to see it when we are there.  I tried Googling Roman Catholic churches in Ballybay but didn't get anything located there.
