Hello, I'm looking for information on an ancestor (John Nixon) who I believe lived in the area of Fermanagh and got married there, with his childrens births registered as being in Clones from early 1800s. (John in 1809) Any advice on how to find out more about this family would be greatly appreciated. Is there anyone I can discuss this with?

  • In the 1796 Flax Growers List, there were two John Nixons from Fermanagh listed:

    Nixon John Derryvullan Fermanagh
    Nixon John Enniskillen Fermanagh

    I hope this is helpful.

  • The parish of Clones is partly in Fermanagh and partly in Monaghan, which is why your births will show up there.

Nixon is a common enough surname in Fermanagh. (In the 1901 census there were 202 of them). In Griffiths Valuation there are 5 or 6 in Clones parish, in Fermanagh c 1860. Can you be a bit more specific about your family? Do you know which townland they lived in, for example? Did John Nixon stay in Fermanagh or did he emigrate? What was his occupation?

  • Thank you both - That is really useful information.

The info I have is: John Nixon b 1785, d 1873 in Clonumphry, Clones. Marriage in 1802 Galloon, Fermanagh.

His son: James Nixon(b 1809) was a saddler.

The grandson (also James) b1828 in Glenish, Monaghan? (labourer) looks like he emigrated to England  - when, I'm not sure -  but he got married in York in 1860.

James (junior)'s grandson, was my grandfather who has recently passed away and I really wanted to find out some more information in his memory, however have always struggled to find the Irish information online.

@Elwyn, I'm not entirely sure how I find out the township? Or any other information that may help me find out more about my irish ancestors?

    Thank you again
