Hi,

Looking for info on mother and father and family of William Smith born Clones, Monaghan 1846 died 1932 Douglas Isle of Man

Born in Clones and moved to Isle of Man married Jane Killey 12.11.1867

I have found a William Smith in the Diocese of Clogher County of Monaghan in the tithe books 1832, residence is Lissorty with some land not sure if this is his father or a different Smith family.

It is also a family rumour that we have Irish tinkers as ancestors but have no idea how you go about finding info out about this with a family name of Smith when so many of them about. Any info would be great

You don't mention if William Smith was Roman Catholic or Church of Ireland or possibly Presbyterian. If he was RC and baptized in 1844 in Clones , a record will not be available. Clones RC baptismal records start in July 1848 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0297  You mention an 1867 marriage record. If it is a civil record, is there a father's name listed?

  • Will,

The 1911 UK census for Wm. and Jane and family states that Wm. was from "Armar."  I'm thinking this could be Co. Armagh. Are you sure about Clones?

    Good luck.

  • William Smith born 17th sept 1846 Clones baptised 27th sept 1846
I use Find my Past website,  I got info from Irish parish registers Ffolliott collection and think these are mostly taken from church of Ireland so does that make him catholic?

I think that his mother and father are William Smith and Ellen Smith (nee Neil) who were married on 7th December 1843.

mother possibly born 1824 army birth Fermoy Cork 71st Ft Regiment Highland Light Infantry?

William Smith (the son) then moved to Isle of Man and got married in 1867 in Braddan, Douglas to Jane Killey and they had 13 children I know all these descendants I am just trying to find out more info about the ancestors in Ireland.

  • Will,

I looked at the UK census records Wm. and Jane appeared in, and on the 1911 it states that Wm. was from "Armar," which I'm guessing was Co. Armagh.

  • Will, Have a look at Wm. in the 1911 UK census and see what you think.
