Hi, I am trying to locate our Great Grandfather Francis Wilson.  He was born in Ireland around 1832-1833 to a Daniel and Mary Wilson and moved to Canada in 1852.  I am trying to confirm if the Francis Wilson - Born to Daniel and Marg. in Clones, Mongahan in 1832  FHL Film # 897416 is our Francis.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Laura

  • Hi Laura,

    Thank you for your message.

It is quite possible that the record you have found relates to your Francis and the ?Marg? is  a misspelling of Mary. Perhaps you could try looking at records available in the parish to see if you can find the original. Do you know the names of any of Francis? siblings? If you do you could do a search for their birth record in Clones to see if it is the same family.

Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Clones parish, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Monaghan&parish=Clones&churchid=297

Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

Have you tried looking into Francis? emigration to see if you can find more specific information on his place of origin? For information on Canadian immigration records check http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

  • Thanks very much for your information.  I have searched mainly FamilySearch and Ancestry and also the Canadian Census.  I now believe that the whole family came over to Canada.  There is a Daniel and Margaret Jane Wilson that came from Monaghan, Ireland with children Margaret Jane(15 yrs) and Andrew Wilson (19 yrs) in the Canada 1861 Census records.  Since Francis Wilson is listed as single in a different location, I am trying to tie the two together.   I think I might have found the connection - as Margaret Jane (the mother) died in Minden Ontario in 1885 and her death certificate is signed by a Frank Wilson (hopefully this is Francis).   If I can confirm this then I have found his parents and siblings.  Daniel Wilson I believe died in 1865 and Ontario did not start keeping death records until 1869 so I do not know who reported the death and/or signed any registration.  However,we would still like to find out where in Monaghan Ireland the family originated.   We have other family connections in Ireland as well and are planning a trip to Ireland once we can nail down the location of the Wilson Family.

    Again, I appreciate your help.

    Thanks

    Laura
