I am seeking information regarding Samuel Wiggins born 1747 or 1748. Father James Wiggins, mother unknown.  The father was from County Monaghan, Clones, as he was baptized there in 1723, there is a record of this.  I am looking for Samuel's record.  Would the Church of Ireland or Presbyterian Church near Tynan have this information?

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Sometimes it can be difficult finding birth/death/marriage certificate prior to 1800 as the reality is that they simply may not exist. It really depends on the parish and what the local parish priest decided to do in terms of records as there was no standardised collection of records at the time.

Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

Here is a link to the contact details for Tynan Church of Ireland parish:

Presbyterian registers are held in three main locations:

    in local custody

in the Public Records of Northern Ireland (PRONI) http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

at the Presbyterian Historical Society http://www.presbyterianhistoryireland.com in Belfast.

PRONI has microfilm copies of almost all registers in Northern Ireland and also lists of records held by the Presbyterian Historical Society.

I also found this link that gives an overview of what church records are available in Armagh:

You could also try contacting Armagh Ancestry for assistance, however a fee may apply. Here Is their email: researcher@armagh.gov.uk

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,
