Hi, thanks for this site, this might be very helpful in the search for my ancestor  Bridget Callaghan.... Bridget was my great, great, great grandmother. She was born in 1811 and was from Donagh, Monoghan county. She married James Fitzpatrick (born 1815) from Portarlington, Queens (now Laois) county in 1839. James and Bridget emmigrated to Prince Edward Island (PEI) Canada, possibly in 1843. On PEI they farmed for a living so James' occupation might have been farner as well in Ireland. Bridget and James were locally involved on PEI in support of the Repeal Movement in Ireland 1843/1844. That is about all that I know. I would appreciate any information that you might have that would would confirm Donagh as Bridget's home and any other connections that there  might be....

Thank you!

Trish

  • Hi Trish,

I did a search for James & Bridget earlier but didn't have much luck.

I couldn't find a birth/baptism record for Bridget in 1811 in Monaghan but there are 6 in other counties on www.rootsireland.ie/ (pay site).

    http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=1&confirmPageView=Y

There are 10 Bridget Callaghan baptisms in Monaghan but they are from 184- to 1877 with 4 from Donaghmore but nonr from Donagh.

The Tithe Applotments (free online) have 3 Callaghans in Donagh Monaghan 1826 - 2 Bernards and a Brian.

I could not find their marraige record.

The closest birth/baptism records for James Fitzpatrick Monaghan 1815 are 1813 & 1817 but neither is from Portarlington.

There are 2  Fitzgeralds in the Tithe Applotments in Laois - year not given but both James.

No luck on Family Search, findmypastireland, irishgenealogy or ancestry.com!

  • Hi Col,

Thanks for responding so quickly...Bernard was the name of their second born son (1847), Wiliam Henry their first (1945). Makes me wonder if they named their WH after James' father and Bernard after Bridget's...James is their third born. All born on PEI. I will continue to search! Thanks again, even the dead ensd are kind of helpful....Trish

  • Unfortunately the RC baptism records for the parish of Donagh don?t start till 1836, so there don?t appear to be any records around the time of Bridget?s birth. And that may explain why Col couldn?t find it for you. So, if she is from Donagh, you probably aren?t going to be able to confirm that very easily (and not from church records which are the usual way).

Details of what RC records exist, by parish, can be found on this link:

  • Hi, thanks for your response....I now know that they (James and Bridget) married in Prince Edward Island, I was able to find their marriage registration.....it's interesting how new areas open up....and there are references to Bridget being from "Tonagh" as well....at her marriage in 1839 it was noted that she was a "spinster" at 28 and James a "widower", so he was married previously, with perhaps  at least one child born in Ireland, William. So Col could not find this as it was not there.

There is great confusion over his birthdate as some references are indicating 1793 and some 1815.....

Good to know that the baptism records were not kept until 1836...

I appreciate all of yoru help and this has been fun uncovering clues and possibilities...thanks again!

    Best,

    Trish

  • There?s 2 townlands called Tonagh in Co Monaghan. One in the civil parish of Aghabog (RC parish of Kilskeery) and the other in Clontibret. Kilskeery?s RC records don?t start till 1840 and Clontibret?s till 1843. So you face the same problem with that revised information.

  • My wife, Judy Fitzpatrick Bain, and I are planning a visit to Ireland in September 2015 to celebrate 50 years marriage. While there we hope to link up with direct descendents of her great, great, great grand father James Fitzpatrick.

We also would like to find the address he and his wife, Bridget Callaghan lived before, immigrating to PEI, Canada. Any assistance in this regardd would be greatly appreciated. It appears Trish Fitzie is asking similar questions.
