I am from Prince Edward Island, Canada and we are searcing for information on a family of Kellys who came from the parish of Donagh (or nearby parish, eg Drumnoland, Tednavet) in 1839. My great, great, great grandmother Mary Kelly (we think she was a widow at the time, late husband perhaps Francis?) left Donagh on a ship Agitator or Connisbruck (Consbrook) out of Belfast. The ship arrived in Charlottetown, PEI in late May 1839.

We think Mary was accompanied by at least 3 sons - Edward (d o birth ~ 1804), Arthur (d of birth ~ 1819) and John (d of birth ~ 1820).

With Edward, 32 to 34 years of age at the time, travelled his wife Ann Boylan (from Donagh or neighbouring parish) and, we think, 2 children - Bridget (d of birth 10 August 1837) and James (d of birth 1838).

We wish to learn the precise location from which our Mary Kelly and her sons came, and we would like to locate and meet any relatives who remained behind in Ireland.

    Hi Pauline,

    Thank you for your message.

I did a search for Francis Kelly in the Tithe Applotment Books. These are land records compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland (the main Protestant church, and the church established by the state until its disestablishment in 1871). There is a manuscript book for almost every parish, giving the names of occupiers, the amount of land held, and the sums to be paid in tithes.

Results came back for a Francis Kelly in Donagh in the townland of Mullaloughan, 1826.

    https://maps.google.ie/maps?q=Mullaloughan+monaghan&hnear=Mullaloughan,+County+Monaghan&gl=ie&t=m&z=15

Also, have you tried looking at the 1901/1911 census records to see if there were any Kelly?s still in the area at the time? You can search these online here:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

It may also be an idea to contact Monaghan Genealogy for assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email: theomcmahon@eircom.net

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Pauline

My name is Mike Kelly, live in MA USA and my family came from Kelly,s cross. My GG grandfather was John Kelly and I knew he was born in 1820. Interestingly enough one of his children baptism record listed a Mary Kelly as one of the sponsors and I could not make the connection. Would you happen to have more infor on your Kelly line and the PEI Kelly boys'?

I think I may be part of Johns line

  • Hello Mike

Thank you for your post and I am excited to think that my GGG grandfather Edward might be a brother to your's, John Kelly.

We have pursued a number of avenues to search for the townland of origin of Mary Kelly and her sons and we have a few leads in progress.

I think, if you are willing to move to email, I could, by that means, more easily shre with you the fruits, to date, of our efforts.

    My email address is    pauline.sutow@alumni.utoronto.ca

Thanks again and I look forward to your reply.

  • Mary Donagh is my 4th GG and John Kelly is my 3rd GG.  I had seen something on ancestry about a landlord named Charles Powell Leslie:

    Charles Powell Leslie

    Glslough, Monaghan, Ireland

Likely Irish landlord to this ancestor. He was instrumental in relocating and settling many Mohaghan families to Prince Edward Island. They cut timber which he imported to Ireland.

I would love to compare trees with all of you.  My email is karlynn17@hotmail.com.  I'm afraid things will go to my junk mail so it may be easier to reply here.  My GG is James Kelly and he married a Mary Ellen Tierney.  I hit a brick wall here.  She died before 1891 and I can't find any of that info or how James died.

  • Dear Pauline, Mike & Karen:

I'm following this post with interest as my Kelly ancestors also emigrated from Ireland to Prince Edward Island.  My great-great grandmother was Mary Kelly  McQuillan who was born in in 1843 at Fort Augustus, PEI to John Kelly and Mary O'Hare.  John Kelly wasnfrom the Glaslough area of Monaghan. I have a family tree on MyHeritage and there is a very good family tree of the PEI families on Ancestry which is managed by a woman who has done a lot of research on families from that area over the years.

Mary Kelly and Patrick J. McQuillan later emigrated to Fall River, MA where they settled with their family and a number of PEI cousins.

Stay safe and the best of luck with your research.  Please let me know if any of the above sounds familiar to any of you.

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Jane,

Have you done any dna testing?

  • Dear Jane,

I replied to you a bit earlier but it appears as though the post was not saved, as I do not see it.

'Our' John Kelly married Catherine Kelly and they lived and raised their family in Kelly's Cross PEI, and were not part of the Fort Augustus group (though coming from the same general area of Co Monaghan, they could have been cousins).

Are you familiar with these 2 resources? The first one, especially is very useful for PEI Irish emigrants, with a section devoted just to the Monaghan group that settled in Fort Augustus ( as well as one devoted to Kelly's Cross)

    • O’Grady, Brendan (2004) Exiles and Islanders: The Irish Settlers of Prince Edward Island.  Montreal: McGill-Queen’s University Press.
    • Burke, Rev Alfred E (1885) An Historical Sketch of PEI Roman Catholic Parishes circa 1885: Catholic Parishes in PEI.

Yes, we have done some DNA testing and by that means we were able to establish the brother relationships between Edward (my forbear) and Arthur and John.

I apologize, as I see that your post was back in 2016 and I was not aware of it and hence did not reply then.

    Are you still there?

  • Hi Pauline:

Many thanks for your message and your email.  Yes, I have done DNA and I will send you an email with the details.

As to the two books that you have mentioned, I was aware of Fr Burke, but not the other author, and many thanks for those details.  I will check that out.

I have tested with Ancestry, FTDNA and MyHeritage.  I do not have my test results on Gedmatch.

I'll shoot you an email very shortly.

    All the best,

  • Hello from Ontario. I'm trying to track down my 4 great grandma Mary Kelly who was born in Kelly's Criss around 1830. She married Michael McCarville in Kelly's Cross in 1852.
