Looking for any info on a Sarah Murphy who lived in Drumsheeny and died around 1924-25. Murphy could have been maiden name or married name.. not sure. Have come to a dead end in my search. She seems to be a bit of a mystery. She is listed in the Census of Ireland 1911 as age 61, head of family and a farmer as profession. She is also listed as a widow having been married for 20 yrs and had 1 child but it had died. Any information greatly appreciated.

Thanks

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located a 1901 census record in Drumsheeny where a Sarah Murphy was a servant to a Laurence Murray family. I also found a civil death index record in the third quarter of 1924 which is likely for Sarah. You could get a copy of this record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. The record would show the informants name and possibly the relationship of the informant to Sarah. Could be a neighbor or possibly a nephew or niece. Let me know if you need instructions to get a copy.

I forgot to mention that it would be very difficult to find her marriage record. I assume Murphy was her married name. You would have to go thru the civil indexes for all marriages in the Monaghan registration district (assuming that is the area of marriage) where there was a male Murphy and try find one where the spouse was Sarah. Also, if she married before 1864 there would be no civil record just a possible church record.

    Hi Roger,

Thanks for your information but I had made a mistake about Sarah's age at the census date.. she was 67 not 61. I have already seen the information on two Sarah Murphys for that time. Looking at the death certificate would be my next port of call if you can help. I have attached a file which shows the 1911 census for her. I had also tried to find a marriage cert with a Murphy groom but came up with nothing which suited, this is why I thought her maiden name could be Murphy. The funeral costs and other correspondence was sent between Drumsheeny and Glasgow around the time of her death.

Go to this link and print out the death form https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

Fill out the form to the best of your ability and make sure that you check copy only. Include the info from the index record. You have to mail the request to GRO in Ireland (address is provided when you print the form). You can ask GRO to e-mail the copy back. I have used a credit card on my requests and have had no issues.

  • Hi Bryan,

I have just seen your posts. My great grandfather John Murphy lived at Drumsheeny and I have visited the ruins of the old house on three occasions. I also met with relatives still living in " Three Mile House " area of County Monaghan who were all extremely kind to me and made me most welcome. For your information access to Drumsheeny is up an overgrown track, only a carts width, the track commences from the roadway next to a converted former school house. It has been many years since my last visit and my contacts details may well be long out of date.

    Yours

  • Hi Stephen,

I am doing this research for my wife who's maiden name is Margaret Murphy. Can I ask what your surname is and where you live as her great grandfather was also called John Murphy who came to Glasgow around the late 1890s and settled in the west end (Partick area). I know there were a lot of Murphy famiies in Drunsnat area at that time. Great Granda John was born in 1869 and died in Glasgow in 1930. His fathers name was also John from Drumsnat parish and was married in 1861 to a Mary Hughes. We seem to be at a dead end and are curious who Sarah Murphy was. Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Bryan
