Hi.

I'm seeking the help of McCarron and McMahon families from the Errigal Truagh & Donagh areas.

My g.g.grandparents were Mary McMahon & Patrick McCarron. They were married in Donagh on 24 Oct 1850 and later went to live in Glasgow, Scotland, where they had 6 children - of which only 2 survived. They were; Ann, Patrick, James, John, Michael, John.

Mary McMahon was from Donagh, Monaghan, and was born circa 1820 to Michael McMahon & unknown Callaghan (death cert information).

Patrick McCarron was from Errigal Truagh and was born circa 1827. I've no further records for him, so don't have any parent names, etc.

If anyone has any information, or thinks they might be related, it would be great to hear from you.

I'm going to assume your family was RC. The RC records for the two parishes start in 1835 (Donagh) and 1836 (Errigal Trough), too late for the baptisms of Mary and Patrick.

I looked at the 1826 Tithe records for Donagh parish and although there were 26 McMahons, none was named Michael. There were 24 McCarrons listed in Errigal Trough for the Tithes. www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie

Below are links to the 1861 Griffiths for the two parishes. In Errigal Trough, there were no McCarrons (one McCarran) but a lot of McCarns.

  • Thanks, Roger.

Actually, I'm not too sure about them being RC at all because the info I have about them (and their descendants) came purely from the Scottish "Statutory & Old Parish Registers". Nothing found in the "Catholic Registers" at all.

Also, Pat's name on their marriage record was indeed spelled "McCarran".

    I appreciate your reply. Thanks.
