seeking info on patrick traynor who died 1897 at drumgurra with bernard traynor present at the death. his daughter mary ann traynor born 1849 was  my g grandmother & came to queensland australia in 1871, her marriage & death records have patrick traynor & judith colwell as parents  .  i believe that john, phillip & laurence traynor of drumgurra are related. when patrick died his name was replaced by bessy on the cancelled rate books in 1898 & her name was replaced by bernard sometime after 1901 .  she is recorded on the 1901 census  any help in this would be appreciated

There is a civil death index record for a Elizabeth Traynor in the Carrickmacross registration district in the first quarter of 1907 Vol 2 page 355. She was reported as age 60.

There is also a civil marriage index record for a Patrick Traynor in 1870 in the Carrickmacross district. One of the possible spouses was an Elisabeth Kirk. Vol 2 page 599.

If you are interested you can get copies of these records from the General Register Office for around 4 euros each. If you plan to get copies let me know and I can forward instructions.

  • hi roger, thanks for your reply. i have previously noted the death of elizabeth traynor in 1907 & as a judith colwell was named as my ggrandmothers  parent i originally thought as  this elizabeth was born around 1847 she may have been a sister & not a wife but with the 1901 census record as a widow it would appear she was a second wife so i will send for the death record. in looking for a death for a judith traynor i have previously sent for the one in 1879 but she was a widowed pauper in the  workhouse & one in 1899 at coothill who was a grocers wife so it would seem judith died before 1864 & not registered.  i have searched the magheross parish records at the lds family history centre but with the 1844 to 1858 gaps have no marriage or birth record results for patrick traynor, i note from griffiths valuation that there were caldwell /calwell familys around nure beg so he may have married in donaghmoyne parish??  i have just downloaded an article on irish nicknames & bessy can also relate to bridget & a bridget treanor died in 1901  & with a couple of marriages for a patrick traynor to bridget in 1870 & 1873  i guess its a process of  elimination/////. hopefully these posts may ring a bell somewhere.        regards trevor

  • Hi there. Member of Traynor family of Drumgurra , South County Monaghan here. HAve some info on a possible connection. My Grandfather name Bernard Traynor- youngest of a family- died 1965. Ran the family farm in Drumgurra and handed it on to my father, Larry Traynor 1923-2001. Farm now in the hands of my brother Patrick. Going back to my Great Grandfather whose name was Lawrence Traynor & who died Nov 1894- according to the family Headstone on the Grave. As already stated his son , Bernard, was my Grandfather and the youngest. He had older brothers Peter, Pack, Jemmy, Martin, Lawrence, & John. no mention of a Phillip but I think you are probably talking about the previous generation ie the siblings of my great Grandfather, Lawrence. maybe he had a brother named Patrick - who you mention. Their dates of death are quite close...1894 & 1897 I will try and find out some more about this generation but there are very few remaining to ask. I hope this helps.

  • hi , thanks for your post & your offer to help.  as i have stated my great grand mother was born around 1850 to patrick traynor & judith colwell at drumgurra  according to her marriage details . i have a patrick born 1827 died 1897 a john born 1826 died 1881 a phillip born 1833 died 1911 a lawrence born 1839 died 1894 who i think were brothers & from the tithe books in 1824 there was an edward a james & a patrick in drumgurra , griffiths valuation 1861 has a phillip a patrick & a john at drumgurra. i have a death for a judith traynor in 1879 at the union workhouse listed as a pauper widow so this cant be the wife of patrick who died in 1897 & may be the wife of an earlier generation patrick .  i have been searching the parish records & found a judith colwell born 1806 to james colwell & margaret lynch at oldcastle meath & a mary traynor born 1848 to a patrick & judith traynor  at knockbride cavan which may be connected //////  i know from the cancelled rate books that bessy replaced patrick  & bernard replaced bessy & she was on the 1901 census as a farmers widow & not on the 1911 census so would you have any knowledge of who she was? i know an elizabeth died in 1907 at dunogue & named nicholas mckone & terence keiran on her will, i believe she was born a finn & her neice katie was the informant at her death. i have acquired a lot of information from the magheross parish records on the families but nothing on patrick & judith colwell so any help would be greatly appreciated  & thanks again for your post   cheers trevor.  ps if you wish i can give you my email address
