How can I get any information regarding Thomas Traynor (various spellings) and his ancestors?
Thomas born about 1835 in Monaghan and moved to England - Co Durham. He married Catharine Hanratty. His granddaughter Maria Trainor was my grandmother.
Many thanks

Neville:
The 1861 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Magheross civil parish lists 3 Trainor and 1 Traynor entries. Possibly, one or more were related to Thomas.
I assume your ancestors were RC. Unfortunately, RC baptismal records start around 1858 for Magheross RC parish.

Hi Neville
Further to Roger's help, www.rootsireland.ie/ which charges to view records has 3 baptism records for Thomas Traynor in Monaghan 1837 and 2 (Trenor) in 1839.
It is possible to get the parish by clicking the magnifying glass at the end of the recordand. I found 2 of the Traynor records were from Tydavnet RC parish. The other is from Errigal Truagh RC parish.

I'm not sure how you can work out which of the three is your Thomas.
You need to purchase the records to get the parents' names. Do you have the name of any of his siblings that would help to narrow down the parents' names?
You might find the Tithe Applotments (1823-37 & free online) interesting; there are 47 Traynors in Monaghan including a Thos & a Thomas so if the name was passed down they could be close relatives.

hi,
It looks like Thomas and Catherine had a number of children in Durham, below is the earliest birth record I could find.
Maybe Thomas and Catherine were married at the same church ??
If so there should be a marriage record which would hopefully show the name of their fathers...

I only find 1 son born to the couple...

Many thanks for all of your help.
I have the marriage certificate for Thomas Trainor and Catharine Hanratty, and details of their children and subsequent generations.
It lists Thomas's father as James - a farmer(presumably in Carrickmacross, where Thomas was born.
Catharine's Farher is listed as Patrick Hanratty - a farmer

I have some information re my Hanratty relatives.
Catharine (or Kate) b1836 Carrickmacross moved to Co Durham England m Thomas Trainor in 1856 in Lanchester Co Durham.
She had a brother Patrick b1843 Carrickmacross He lived in Gateshead around 1871 where his daughter died. He moved back to Ireland with his wife Ellen who, I think, died in Carrickmacross in 1873.
Catharine and Patrick's father was a farmer in Carrickmacross.
can anyone help with more information?
Thanks again for all previous help

Neville:
You were correct about the year of death for Ellen. Did Patrick die young also? Found a Patrick Hanratty born 1843 who died in 1877.
You mentioned that Patrick Hanratty was the father of Catherine and Patrick. The Griffiths shows a Patrick Hanratty in Corduff (Kelly) townland. Is that him?
