Dia diobh a chairde,

My 3rd great grandparents emigrated from County Monaghan. James Rafferty born 1 July 1810 in Carrickmacross, arrived Boston 15 April 1849 and settled in Woburn, Massachusetts according to his Naturalization Intention dated 12 August 1853. Michael Rafferty, born 1 March 1813 Carrickmacross, settled the same East Woburn village, after arriving Boston on 4 November 1849.

James' wife, Bridget Kelley, born about 1810 - 12, arrived from Co. Monaghan with children: Owen b.1831, Mary 1832, Julia 1836, Agnes 1843, Hugh 1845, Anne b. Dec 1846, and presumed US births followed for Francis 1852 and Margaret b. May 1854.

Other names from East Woburn which appear among the intentions include Owen McEvoy b  1795 Carrickmacross and Peter McKenna b. 1813 Drumhaven,

Any suggestions on how to find the correct parish and more information are appreciated.

Go raibh maith agat, D. Andrews, Woburn, Massachusetts

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and unfortunately did not find the Rafferty/Kelly marriage record or any baptismal records for the children listed in your message. The baptismal records for the RC parish of Carrickmacross do not begin until 1858 which likely explains why I did not get any records when I searched.

The civil parish is Magheraross. I did check out the 1861 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings for the parish and there were eight Rafferty records listed. Likely some are connected to James Rafferty.

Here is some background information of St. Joseph's church in Carrickmacross

You may want to add the James Rafferty emigration story to our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will see a connection.  https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

Let me know if you have questions.
