Am looking for references to Capt John Haire of Glaslough, Co Monaghan. He was in the British Army in a Garrison Regiment and served various including Tasmania and Adelaide, South Australia, in 1841.

His son Francis Haire attended Trinity College Dublin, married Jane Jude in 1848 then emigrated to Adelaide in 1849 and set up a school. He died in 1864.

John Haire died in 1862. His will was probated finally in 1863 to Francis Haire of Drumcin, Co Armagh.

I am trying to establish birth for Francis and possibly marriage for John Haire etc. The 1901 census shows a Francis Haire, 50, in Drumcin whho may be a son of the Francis in the probate record.

A daughter of Francis Haire, TCD, married my great grandfather Thomas Wilson in Adelaide.

  • William,

The Francis Haire, aged 50, in the 1901 census lived in Drumcrin, which is in Co Fermanagh, not Armagh.

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Fermanagh/Bellisle/Drumcrin/1358945/

He does appear to have had a father named Francis. See this probate abstract, from the PRONI site:

Letters of Administration of the personal estate of Francis Haire late of Drumcrin County Fermanagh Farmer a Widower deceased who died 7 February 1875 at Clones County Monaghan were granted at Armagh to Francis Haire of Drumcrin (Lisnaskea) Farmer the Son of said deceased. Effects under ?450. Date of Grant 5th April 1875.

The family were evidently Church of Ireland, and the parish they lived in was Aghalurcher. So if you search Aghalurcher?s records you may find Francis?s senior?s baptism. I don?t think the Aghalurcher  COI records are on-line. There are however copies in PRONI, Belfast. (A personal visit is required to access them).

The Haire family appear to have had relatives nearby in Co. Monaghan, viz from this abstract:

The Will of John Haire late of Glasslough in the County of Monaghan Esquire deceased who died 21 February 1861 at same place was proved at Armagh by the oath of Francis Haire of Drumcrin in said County Farmer one of the Executors. Effects under ?200. Date of grant 13th March 1861.

Both the above probate files have been destroyed and all that remains are the abstracts.

Frances Haire in the 1901 census, looks to have married in Jan ? Mar 1883 (Vol 3, page 109, Clones, Co Monaghan) Alternatively you can get his wife?s details from the birth cert of their last son Archie, birth registered Lisnaskea, Jan ? Mar 1900 Vol 3, page 155. (I think it was probably Eleanor (nee Moore) who died Jan ? Mar 1900, Lisnaskea Vol 3, page 200. Est year birth 1863).

The tithe applotment records for Aghalurcher should tell you who was on the Drumcrin farm in the late 1820s/early 1830s. They are not on-line but again a copy is held in PRONI. Part of the 1821 census for Aghalurcher has survived but unfortunately does not include this townland.

Drumcrin and some adjacent townlands were sold under the Encumbered Estates arrangements (for landowners who were technically bankrupt). There?s a copy of relevant papers in PRONI under ref D1201/32, dated 27.2.1852. These should contain maps of the estate and details of each tenant and the validity of their leases. (The sitting tenants leases needed to be honoured by the purchaser, hence the need for this information). If you are lucky, the Haire family may have had a 3 lives lease, in which cases the 3 lives and their ages will be listed. That might get you back to the 1700s. This is what PRONI?s index lists:

27 February 1852 Irish Encumbered Estates Court Rentals. Rental and particulars of the estate of the said party. Maps of the estate.

Parties: Estate of John Colpoys Bloomfield Esq., owner, ex-parte: Sir Josiah William Hort Bart., petitioners. Relates to

Aghnablaney, Corlaght, Drumcrin, Derrins Tullyvarid, Derrylougher, Protblahy, Tullyvocady and Inishturk, and Inishturk

    Islands, Co. Fermanagh.

You might get the information from findmypast, who have the Encumbered Estates records (pay to view). Search under Landed Estate records.

    Other records in PRONI:

D3007/A/23/26 Leases of the townland of Glassmullagh, Co. Fermanagh; two of the leases also include and in Drumcrin. [For Drumcrin see also D3007/A/23/47.]
