I am looking for information on the family of Patrick Martin from Cornamucklagh, Donaghmoyne, County Monaghan.  He had a brother Edward who was a priest and was born Dec 1841. Edward emigrated to the US on 4 May 1864. Patrick married Catherine Finegan who was born in 1853.  Patrick and Catherine had 2 children Thomas Edward born 21 Dec 1878 and married Anna Conroy after emigrating to the US. Peter was born 22 Jan 1881 and married Catherine and had 3 children - Edward born 1908, Mary born 1910 and Annie born 1911. (I have no hard facts on Peter so his connection to Patrick no not be correct.)

  • Below are the 1901 and 1911 census records for the Patrick Martin family. Patrick died before 1901. I found death index records in Carrickmacross registration district for a Patrick Martin death in 1888, 1891, 1895 and 1898. Not sure which is your Patrick. I was using a subscription site www.findmypast.ie but you can also use www.familysearch.org for free. if you find a good death index record, you can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie for a copy.

Griffiths Valuation for 1861 has 3 Martin households in Garranroe/Cornamucklagh. Catherine Martin had plot which was a farm outbuildings and c 25 acres; Thomas had plot 4 a farmhouse, buildings and c 6 acres & Henry had plot 5 a farmhouse, outbuildings and c 13 acres. All seem likely to be related to your family.

The next set of records backwards in time are the tithe applotment records. The records for 1825 show no Martin households then, so it appears that the family moved to the townland between 1825 & 1861. The surname Martin is common enough in the parish (Donaghmoyne) and they probably came from a townland nearby.
