Hi,

I'm searching for information about my great great grandparents Patrick Macklin and Bridget Thornton who lived in Co. Monaghan.  I know of three children born to them who went to New York City, Catherine born about 1839, Emily born about 1844 and Mary born after Emily - date not sure of.

    Hello again!

I searched on Roots Ireland from 1839-1849 for children of Patrick Macklin in Co. Monaghan. No records came up. There are a number of RC parishes in Monaghan which do not have records back to 1840 or so.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you for your reply.  I did find a Baptism Record on Roots Ireland - Denomination Not Listed - for a Francis Macklin, baptized 19 April 1836 with parents Patrick Macklin and Bridget Thornton.  They are the same parents as for my great grandmother Catherine and her sisters, Emily and Mary.  The address was "Aghnagap" which comes up as two different townlands in Co. Monaghan when searched on The IreAtlas Townland Database.  The link to the actual record was for the Diocese of Clogher, Parish of Monaghan.

Can you tell me how I should go about researching this family based on that record?   Where I should write, etc.?

The correct Aghnagap would be the one in Monaghan civil parish. The 1861 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows a number of Macklins including three in Aghnagap but no Patrick.

I went back to Roots and came up with three more records. They were in the RC parish of Monaghan, the father was Patrick Macklin but the mother was shown as Bridget McSkean. At least two record showed Aghnagap. The records were Emelia 1838 ( is this Emily) James 1841 and Ellen 1850.

Here is a link to the parish register  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0316   maybe you can review the register and find Catherine.

  • Dear Roger,

Thank you very much for your help.  I looked at the records you found and do think that could be Emily.  I will do some more research.  I haven't been able to find when they came to the U.S. but they were married and in NYC on the 1870 census, in fact even before since there are children listed on that census.

I am a little confused with the two records that equate McSkean and Thornton and can't figure out why both names would be listed for Bridget especially with an equals sign.  I noticed that Thornton was not in the original register.  Do you know why it is notated that way?

Again, thank you for all your help.
