My great great grandmother was named Matilda Steinson or Stevenson.  She was the daughter of a wealthy farmer born around 1828.  She eloped with a farm hand named Patrick Connolly after being chased by her father and brothers and hiding in a pig stye.  They eventually settled in Morell Rear. Lot 39 Prince Edward Island (PEI)  Cananda.  She identies herself as born in Ireland on the PEI 1881 and 1891 census.  She died between 1891 and 1901 on PEI. Her first son was named Bernard and was born around 1848.  They had several other children. Patrick was a successful farmer who lived beyond 1901. We believe he came from Monaghan.

She may have been related to the House of Stuart - but not confirmed.    Any info on Steinson family would be welcomed.

  • Happy to see your post. I also am a great great grandson of Patrick Connolly and Matilda Steinson/Stevenson.
Our research has indicated their first son, John Bernard Connolly was born 16 Oct 1847 at Johnston River, PEI. He is my great grandfather and lived next door to where I was raised at lot 39,PEI.
I believe Matilda originated at a farm in Castle Leslie area in Monaghan County. During a trip to Ireland in fall of 2012 we noticed a WW2 war memorial at a church on the Castle Leslie property with the name Steenson on it and wonder if this was connected to our Matilda?
We had a Connolly Reunion in July, 2013 with a picture of Matilda on the family tree book cover.
We were unable to determine when Patrick and Matilda arrived on PEI but I speculate it was spring/summer of 1847. Meacheams Atlas Lot plan indicates their location on Lot 39 (Morell Rear) of PEI during 1857.
Any other details/knowledge of Patrick and Matilda would be greatly appreciated.
    Les
