Hi,

My great grandfather Patrick Farmer was born in 1871 in Scotstown as best as I can tell and emigrated to NY. I believe his father was Peter Farmer - I see a Griffiths Valuation record for a Peter Farmer Tenant Farmer in Bough, under landlord Patrick Sharry.

I am actually in Ireland this week and plan to drive through the area  any advice on how to track down birth dates and exact farm location?

Thanks!

  • Dear Bill:

If you are in the Clones area, there is a wonderful local history section at their branch library and they can assist you locally.  The librarian there is Caitriona Lennon and you should mention Ireland Reaching Out.  She is familiar with the program and she has offered assistance to other visitors to County Monaghan.

In addition, the parish registers that you have been referred to above may be available to view through the Tydavnet Parish Office.  Their link is here and you should definitely email them beforehand.  You might also note their office hours:  https://www.clogherdiocese.ie/parishes/parish-details/?parishID=36

Please feel free to ask any questions.  I am the Volunteer Coordinator for the Ireland Reaching Out Programme and I will do my best to assist you.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Hi Miriam,

Wow - I am blown away by your amazing response to a total stranger. Thank you so much on behalf of my whole family!

A few of these sources are new to me so thank you for the explanation on each. Will report back after I do some deeper digging but it certainly appears that the younger Peter Farmer you found is a brother of my great grandfather Patrick Farmer, confirming your theory that there are likely more siblings.

Ireland has been great so far - met other relatives in Roscommon so this has been quite a history lesson already.

    Best,

    Bill
