Hello,

My great great grandfather was Edward Duffy who married a Bridget Quigley circa 1840's.  They had a daughter Mary in 1846 and then they immigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Edwards father I believe was John Duffy who married a Mary McKenna.  Edward was a cooper by trade and went to Halifax to a Patrick & Richard Duffy who owned a Cooper shop.  By 1850 Edward opened up his own Cooper shop and stayed in Halifax until he died in 1907.  I know there were quite a number of Duffy & McKennas in this area and I would like to find out more about them.

Are there any records of coopers in this area?  I know that the parish records do not start until the 1860's. I have found some Duffy & McKennas  in the Tithe Appl. Books but I am not sure if they are mine or not.

Can you suggest to me where to look for other records that may help me to find my Duffy & McKenna families?  I will be coming to Ireland next April and hope to be able to find the Duffy/McKenna homestead.

I thank you in advance for any assistance that you can provide.

Sincerely,

Janis Duffy

The only other source is the 1861 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Tullycorbet civil parish. There are a large number of Duffys including three John Duffy entries. Unfortunately, you don't know if your John lived until 1861. There are also 9 McKenna entries.

I have also included a pamphlet put out by the Co. Monaghan library on researching in the county.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Roger,

Thanks for the info.  I have search Griffiths Valuation and found a John Duffy in the townland of Lennan but without further information I cannot be sure that this is my John Duffy. And as you state my John Duffy may have died during the famine and that is why all of his children immigrated.  When I come next April I will search through the Cancellation books to see if there are any clues there. If you come across any histories of the townlands in the Ballybay area I would appreciate it if you could let me know. I have read, "At the Ford of the Birches", by Peadar Murnane.  If fact I have emailed him but he was not hopeful that I would be able to find the right Duffy family.  I will persevere however as the Irish never give up.

    Thanks again,

    Janis Duffy
