Hello,

Has anyone seen any information or have knowledge of any Murphy or Leonard/Lennon families in Tullycorbet parish, Ballybay, County Monaghan? My great-great-great-grandparents are Michael Murphy and Margaret Leonard Murphy. Both were born in 1830, were married in County Monaghan in 1852 and went to Scotland before leaving from Liverpool in 1855 for Iowa, United States.

Thanks!

  • Dear Colleen

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in replying to your message.

As you can see from the link below, Tullycorbet is a Civil Parish in Co. Monaghan:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/townlands/index.cfm?fuseaction=TownlandsInCivil&civilparishid=1972&civilparish=Tullycorbet&citycounty=Monaghan

Records for the corresponding Roman Catholic Parish of Tullycorbet begin in 1862. As this is the case, there will be no parish records for Michael and Margaret. Have you searched the Tithe Applotment Books and the later Griffith?s Valuation for instances of the name in the parish?

    Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1837): http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

    Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864): http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

You could also search the sites suggested below for any Leonard/Lennon instances in the area. You may be able to link those with that surname with your own ancestors:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Best of luck with your search
