  • Hi there,

There are Roman Catholic church records for the diocese of Cootehall (Elphin) (which is where the parish of Ardcarn is). These date from 1843 for both baptismal and marriage records. You can find these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4612, or the Church of Latter Day Saints 0989746. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information.

There is another documents you could check called the Reproductive Loan Fund records. This covers a number of parishes including Ardcarn and contains more than 9,000 names. This can be found at the UK National Archives(http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/) T 91.

There are estate records available from the National Library of Ireland (NLI) Mss. 3104/5. These records come from Lord Lorton. They include lease books, 1740-1900, including many leases to small tenants, with lives mentioned in the leases. It covers townlands in the civil parishes which include Ardcarn.

Another estate landlord was Charles Manners St. George (NLI Mss. 4001-22). Accounts and rentals (annual), 1842-46, 50-55, 61-71. These cover townlands in the civil parishes of Ardcarn and two others.

Thomas Tenison (NLI Ms. 5101). Rental and accounts, 1836-40. Covering townlands in the civil parishes of Ardcarn and Kilronan.

If you know any more information, please post it here.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

  • I have a file of all the information I have been able to find both by myself and outside help both US and Ireland. I'd like to determine if there are any surviving descendents of my family. I pretty well think I have the actual location where they were before leaving for the us in 1849(wife and children) I do not know when the father left either before or after..If you think you could be of assistance the file is yours for the asking.

Regards Shaun Seymour descendent of John and Anne Healey(in us Haley)
