Hello am looking for a Charles Flynn born 1790 married to Peggy Flynn, lived Ballintober, they had a son Michael Flynn born in 1839. Michael married Mary Burke in Castlerea in 1864. They had three children Catherine, Anne and Michael, all born and christened in Castlerea/Castleplunket. I have come to a standstill with our family tree and am hoping someone may recognise Charles and Peggy in their family tree. I would be so grateful. Many thanks.

  • Marie:

I found a Charles Flynn in the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing. He was living in Rosmeen townland in Ballintober civil parish. I also located a civil death index record for a Charles Flynn who died in 1880 in the Castlereagh registration district which would include Ballintober. Not positive that this is your Charles. The informant said he was born in 1790 but I'm sure that was a guess. The death is registered in the April-June 1880 quarter in Volume 4 page 98. A copy of this record costs four euros from the General Register Office. if you plan to get a copy, let me know and I will forward instructions.

  • Roger, Thank you very much for your time.  We do have some information from Mary Skelly at Roscommon Heritage Centre in Strokestown, we know that Charles died on 10th January 1880 in Rosmeen aged 90, and from the Griffiths Valuation 1857 we also know that he leased an acre of land in Rosmeen from the Packenham Mahons  (John Mahon). We have no records regarding Charles Flynn's birth or baptismal records . I would be grateful if you cold let me know how to access the death record from the G.R.O.

  • ~~Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

    Marie:

The instructions are above. A death record will have the date of death, cause of death, age, location of the deceased and the informant's name and sometimes the relationship of the informant to the deceased. Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has Ballintober RC records starting in 1831. I looked for a baptismal record for Michael son of Charles but there was no record. Maybe he was baptized in a different parish. Roots is a pay site to view the actual data that was transcribed from the church record.

Do you have the civil marriage record for Michael and Mary Burke? It is registered in Castlereagh in 1864 Volume 19 page 77 Mary was shown as Maria.
