I am looking for any information regarding my GG uncle John Gannon.  I believe he was born in 1857 in County Longford.  I belive he had a brother Thomas that was older.  Any information regarding John would be appreciated.  He might have lived with Thomas in the ballinrobe barracks.  I would like to know if he ever married and had any children.

  • There are 2 John Gannons, 1 bapt.1858 the other 1857. 1857 is son of Michael. 1858 son of John. No trace of a brother Thomas to either.

  • Hello Peggy,

Bob (above) has probably given you the results of a search he did using rootsireland.ie, which contains the parish registers. They are the key sources for the period before 1864 when civil registration began. Have you any idea from where in Longford John came?

    Best wishes,

  • Martin,

I found out that John was born in 1857 possibly Curry newtownforbes.  I have just come across a death notice on Ancestry.com that shows the death of John Gannon in 1927 Ballinrobe which I believe is in Mayo.  I am thinking this could be my Great Granfathers brother because Thomas Gannon (my GGF) was stationed in Ballinrobe with the RIC.  John was the sponsor for one of Thomas children in Ballinrobe.  Thomas was 11 years older than John so I am thinking he might have stayed with Thomas and then remained in Ballinrobe after Thomas retired.  The two parishes that come up are Rathcline and Newtownforbes.  Would there be any information regarding John in the Church records?  Perghaps he married and had children?  Would it show his father/mothers name if he married in Ballingrobe.  I guess u have more questions than answers.  Your help is greatly appreciated!
