If you would like assistance on your ancestors from Baslick civil parish could you provide names and ages.

    Thanks!

  • Roger,

    Thank you for your response.

I have zeroed in on the Kilkeevin and Baslic districts as the homeland for my GGGrandparents, Patrick Burns and Ann Mulrooney. Like so many of the farmers from the Frencpark/Thobine'Kilkeevin/Baslic area many departed for West Orange, NJ, USA to work in the hat factories there.

The reason I have focused on this area is that Patrick and Ann's daughter, Bridget Burns (b.ca 1845 and died 21 May 1923) stayed behind and married Thomas Crane (b ca 1840 and died 8 Dec 1915) and lived, raised a family and died in Corlis.  (Note of caution, some variations on the spelling within their family are Crane, Craine, Crayne, and Crean) Since, according to public records, they both died in Corlis I presume that they are buried there, and I would love to find their graves when I visit Corlis this summer on July.7.

The second reason for focusing on the Kilkeevin and Baslic areas for Bridgets parents and siblings is that the Ogula Church records show a number of Mulrooneys as baptism sponsors, namely Peter, Patrick and Mary.. I therefore suspect that there is a strong bond between the families beyond the marriage of my gggrandparents.  I have found death records for a Pat Mulrooney in Corlis (11 Mar 1900), various records for a James, Michael and Patrick in Falmore, a John, Michael, Charles and Patrick in Frenchpark, and Michael and Peter in Embla.  I am not sure if these areas are sufficiently close to Corlis to makes sense, but I could use some guidance as to the geography and feasability of these folks being those who were baptism sponsors for Bridget's children.

So, any help you can provide in helping me sort this out would be gratefully appreciated.

    Best regards,

    Joe

After I started reading this message, I knew I had researched this family before.  https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/message-board/burnsmulrooney

FYI Embla is Emlagh a townland in Baslick civil parish. I believe all of these locales: Frenchpark, Emlagh, Corlis, Falmore are all in a 5-10 mile radius.

Corlis is a 537 acres townland in Baslick civil parish and I assume the land is mostly agricultural. I would not expect that your relatives were buried in Corlis.

I found some Creans buried in Baslick graveyard  https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/119454193/patrick-crean

Another nearby cemetery is Rathmoyle cemetery.  https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=28204

  • Roger,

Thanks again for your reply.  After sending my last post, I checked my earlier post on Burns/Mulrooney, and realized that you had alread been in touch with me.

I checked the link to the Baslic graveyard, and the Patrick Crean that appears is a home run.  Patrick was the third child of Thomas Crane (Crean, Craine, Crayne and any number of other variations) He and his younger brother, Thomas remained behind and ran the farm.and was present at Bridget's death.

Unfortunately, though the cemetery seems quite old, I see no other Cranes buried there, so the search for Bridget's resting place goes on.  Neither did I find any Burns (with variations) or Mulrooneys.

Anyway, thanks again so much for your time and effort.

    Best regards,

    Joe

It is possible Patrick was buried in the unmarked grave of his parents and the marker only referenced Patrick.

  • Hello Joe,
Although the gravestone is modern in Baslic, that grave is the resting place of all the creans of Corlis  including Bridget Burns. Bridget Burns would have been my great great grandmother. We are not familiar for a grave for Mulrooney in Baslic. A lot of the graves are unmarked with only stones as it is so old. It is a shame you were not pointed in our direction on your travels as we could have helped you with this information. As your name is not Crean, you must be a direct descendant of Celia, Mary-Anne or Bridget, who must have married when they went to America. Thanks and God bless, Ciara

  • Hello Ciara,

I just now saw your post, so please forgive my lateness in replying.

First of all, I am not descended from Bridget Burns Crane.  I am descended from her brother, James Burns, son of Patrick Burns and Ann Mulrooney.  (Sarah, Bridget, Peter, James, Catherine and William) Patrick and all his children, except Bridget, emigrated to the Orange, NJ, USA in about 1860.

In traveling to Ireland this summer, my goal was to visit Bridget's grave.  I guess I did and did not realize it.  I did see her son Patrick's headstone, so I guess I was standing on Bridget's grave as well.  But there was some good fortune, as in speaking to a local person, I was pointed to the "original Crane residence"  I have a picture of what remains on Ireland XO if you are interested.

How is it that you are related to the Crane family?  Would be glad to exchange information on those who traveled to the US...John, Mary Ann, Martin, James and Celia.

    Best regards,

    Joe

  • Joe/Ciara:

FYI. We had a systems problem and notification messages were not going out for about ten weeks. The problem was fixed last week and the backlog was generated out so not Joe's delay but ours.
