I am interested to find lost relatives of:

John Pettit born in Cloontuskert, Ballyleague on 11 May  1876. His father was Patrick Pettit and his mother was Mary Pettit.(nee Kelly).

I am living in South Africa and am married to Kenneth Pettit (grandson for John Pettit). We are planning a visit to Ireland in July to trace my husbands roots.

I found the family in the 1901 census. They were living in Anrittabeg townland in Cloontuskert parish.  In the 1911 census only Bridget was living in the house. I found death index records for the parents and also John's brother Patrick. The three of them died in 1908-1909. You can write to the GRO www.groireland.ie to get copies of the death records. Fill out their form and provide the registration district, quarter/year of death and the volume and page number. I could not locate Edward Pettit.

  • Dear Roger

Thank you for information. I did manage to obtain the 1901 and 1911 census and established that only Bridget was living the household in 1911 but was unmarried. I believe that the two brothers Edward and James Pettit became Catholic priests so probably only John Pettit continued the lineage to my family today.

Hence, my need to continue searching for the Pettit genealogy - going back to Patrick's brothers and sisters and his father and mother.

Hope you will be able to assist me.

  • Go to www.familysearch.org  and enter Patrick Pettit in Ireland for the years 1864-1875 and you will find records for at least three more children of Patrick and Mary Kelly. (Some records show Pettet). The children were Denis, Mary, and Anne. There is also a record for a John born in 1872. Possibly some of these children died young.

There is also a 1834 Tithe Applotment record for a Patrick Pettit in Anrittabeg townland showing that he paid the Tithe tax. I assume this Patrick is the grandfather of John.

I also checked the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing and found a Patrick Pettit in Anrittabeg. This could be either the father or grandfather of John. Let me know if you have further questions.

  • Hi, I asked my mother about Pettit in Anrittibeg which is also spelt as Anratabeg in some circles. She explained where the house was that Bee Pettit lived in (your Bridget). It has been sold a few times since and renovated but if you want a look at the house which I am pretty sure is the same one use this Eircode N39 CX46. You can use it in Google Maps to get a look at it or for directions. The local graveyard that they are most likely buried in is Cloontuskert graveyard (53.6979920, -8.0132929) but I will make enquiries and get back to you. Enjoy your trip ... #stayCovidfree

  • This is interesting. Bee Pettit  (or Aunt Bee as I knew of her) is/was a great aunt of mine. For years at Christmas time she used to send a turkey to us in Dublin until, I suppose she died. That would have been in the 1940s, maybe even early 1950s.

The 2 priests mentioned were uncles of mine and were the sons of Thomas Pettit another son of Patrick and Mary Pettit (neé Kelly). Thomas Gerard Pettit and John Joseph Pettit both born in Warrentpoint, Co Down as was my father Edmund Patrick Pettit.

Thank you for the Eircode which I have just looked up and hopefully if and when Covid allows I'll make a trip there.

Some others of that family went to the US and I'd love to learn something about them. If you have any information I'dlove to hear it.

    Thanks again

    Eithne Lawless (neé Pettit)

I should have said Bee Pettit was a grand aunt of mine, not a great aunt.
