Looking for records of my great, great grandfather John Murtaugh (or Murtagh) of Roscommon, Ireland. Possibly born abt 1817 +-. Found Griffiths record of 1858 Ballyglas, Cloontuskert for a John Murtagh. I cannot confirm if this is my relation or not. That is why I am seeking more info. He was married to Mary Flynn. His son James Murtaugh (born abt. 1841) emmigrated from Ireland abt. 1861 to New York and settled in Lockport, N.Y. He was a Roman Catholic and worked as a farmer. His obit mentioned that he was from Roscommon, Ireland but no mention of parish or village. Other records found include references to Gortgallan and Termonberry and Lissonuffy as well as Kilglass and Kilmacumsy. Appreciate any help. Thank you. David Murtaugh.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched Roots Ireland in the 1830s and although there were three John Murtaugh/Murtagh marriages in Co. Roscommon listed in their data base, none were to a woman with the surname Flynn. No baptismal record for a James Murtaugh 1836-1846.

Where did you find the reference to Gortgallan? Gortgallan is a townland in Cloontuskert civil parish. The RC records for that area do not begin until 1865 which may explain why I did not find any records on Roots. The other names (Kilmacumsy, Kilglass, Termonbarry and Lissonuffy) are all civil parishes. Termonbarry, Lissonuffy and Kilglass are all just ot the north of Cloontuskert. Kilmacumsy is a good distance away to the northwest.

Let me know what questions you have.

  • Thank you Roger. The other parishes mentioned are from other Griffiths or Tithe Applotment records where the name John Murtagh was mentioned. I am trying to narrow down the location of my John Murtaugh since all I know is he lived in Roscommon and was married to Mary Flynn.

  • There are Murtaghs in the 1901 - 1911 census living in Erra,  I do not know if these are the same Murtaghs you are looking for.  There are three families of these Murtaghs still in Erra and others living close by.  x
