I am living in South Africa and will be visiting Ireland in June/July 2013.

I would like to trace my lost relatives - descendents of John Pettit born 11 May 1876 in Cloontuskert (this Parish), Ballyleague, Roscommon.

His father was Patrick Pettit, who was a small farmer who lived in Anrittabeg and his mother was Mary Pettit.

I would like to meet for a Gathering with family members. If anyone knows of relatives still living in this parish, please let me know.

  • Hi Bernadine,

Thank you for your message. I have forwarded it on to one of our volunteers in the area who hopefully may be able to advise or assist you.

In the meantime we have added a new link to the top of our page  for people who are planning on visiting in 2013. It takes you to a short web form. We would really appreciate it if you could take a moment to complete this. Thank you!

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Bernadine, our volunteer has come back with the following information:

Regarding the John Pettit inquiry, Anrittabeg, Parish of Cloontuskert, County Roscommon, I have made local inquiries and am pleased to advise that there were members of the Pettit family living at the same address in living memory.   The Pettit house still  stands and is owned by a Scally family.   A local resident, Mrs Mary O Duill, is available to speak with Bernardine Pettit [ ] to fill her in on the information she has on the family.

The County Roscommon Genealogy Centre (St John's Church), Church Street, Strokestown, Co. Roscommon, have records of this Pettit family.  I suggest that Bernardine Pettit contact them at Tel: (071) 9633759 or e-mail:inforoscommonroots@roscommoncoco.ie.

Our volunteer, Shane Lynskey has Mrs. Mary O Duill telephone number and if you email him directly at scda@eircom.net he will be happy to relay this number for you. I hope that this is helpful.

    Kind regards,
