I am seeking information on my ancestor John Mullery. According to the Tithe Applotment books he lived in Creagh in 1825. His son Peter, my 3rd great-grandfather, was born around 1827 so he may have been born in Creagh. John later moved to County Galway and Peter emigrated to England in 1846 where he married Catherine McDonagh before emigrating to the US in 1851.

  • Hi there,

Thank you for your follow-up message on Ireland Reaching Out. Creagh is in the diocese of Ballinasloe (Clonfert). Baptism records in this area start from 1820. The National Library of Ireland may have a copy of this early register. Otherwise try writing to the parish priest in the area. The National Library reference number is: NLI Pos.2432.

Hope this is of some help.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Sinead,

Do you know if there is any way that I can find out what Catholic churches existed in the vicinity of Creagh around 1825? A list of these churches would greatly reduce the amount of research needed, especially since I am not located in Ireland and am unable to travel to the National Library.

    Thank you,

    Andrew P. Huzar

  • Hi Andrew,

Have you looked at the Ordnance Survey website yet? http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,591271,743300,0,10 This has a useful historic layers section you can overlay on the original map. You can choose what buildings you are interested in and it will show them for you.

If you would like you should contact the National Library of Ireland by email or letter. I am sure they would be able to accommodate you enquiries about any documents they hold.

    Kind regards,

  • I have an ancestor who came from Carroward in County Roscommon and was born in the early 1800's.  I am not sure what Parish this would be in but I would like to connect with  anyone else who has a connection with this family or it's branches.
