Looking for information/family members of John Edward Sloan, who immigrated from Roscommon (possibly Elphin) abt 1845-49. His father, John Sloan lived from 18oo - 1840 County Roscommon, Elphin, Connaught, Ireland.

Beth:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I checked on Roots Ireland and below is the only Slone baptismal record they had. Aughrim is the parish to the northeast of Elphin. I also checked the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing and there was an Edmond Sloan listed on Main St. in Elphin. Any other clues?

I think that's the family! I have John's birthday as As January, but the parents are John and Bridget! Another clue in the great family mystery! Thank you

We are also related to John Sloan's family, Elphin, Roscommon, Ireland. Our Sloan ancesters travelled to Upstate, NY near Syracuse, Baldwinsville in the mid 1850s. Iv've been trying to find out which ship they took to the New World (possibly through Canada), but have been unsuccessful. Any ideas?
Our family is on Ancestry.com. We also have Sloans that hail from County Down, Ireland, but that was back in early 1800s.
Regards,
Robert Emmett Sloan

Ancestors who first made the trip were Patrick / Mary Sloan. Not sure where they were married either.

It's helpful to know the variations in name spellings of the 19th century (before spellings were standardized)
The formal name Edmond / Edmund was interchangeable with Edward and Edwin. However, he was most likely known locally as Éamonn / Éamon. Catholic parish registers in this area may have recorded him as Edmundus / Eadmundus.
To find out more about any Irish ancestor's given name variations, check out the full listing on "A guide to Irish Christian names".
Sloan was also spelled Sloane and may also have regisered as O' Sloan / O'Sloane as it originated from the Gaelic form (which also has a variety of spellings). This might guide you through the myriad of spellings in the Tithe Applotment Records.
To find out more about any Irish ancestor's surname variations, you can run a search on sloinne.ie
IGP also has a handy resource for Co. Roscommon, such as headstones, cemetery records etc which you can access here.
1842 Tithe Applotment records show a Pat Sloan farming in Kinard (just north-east of Elphin, which also suggests AUGHRIM). This may have been the family's place of origin.

Hello,
I am a great-grand son of John and Bridget Sloan from Baldwinsville, NY. My immediate family has done extensive research over the years of the family. Would enjoy hearing from other family members, close or far. My direct email: johnesloan1@gmail.com. Take care, and stay well.
