My great great grandfather Matthew Walsh and his wife Mary Brady left Ireland in 1841 to emigrate to Australia. Matthew's parents were Luke Walsh and Margaret Flanagan. He was born around 1818. We have been unable to find his baptism. We do have his siblings: Michael Walsh, born in Killeen, baptised on 25th July 1823; Luke and Peter Walsh, twins, born in Culleen, baptised on 8th July, 1825; Bridget Walsh, baptised on 4th March, 1829; and Rose Walsh baptised on 4th March 1841. Matthew Walsh and Mary Brady married around 23rd December 1839. They had a child Luke Walsh, born in Culleen, baptised on30th November 1840 who died before they left for Australia in about September 1841.

I would love to find any descendants of Matthew's siblings or anyone related to Mary Brady. She may have been born in 1814 to John Brady and Anne Farrell and baptised on 3rd September 1814. She had  a sister Bridget Born in Laughtcask (Tully parish) baptised in Elphin parish on 12th March 1811. Mary also had a brother John also of Laughtcask baptised on 6th April 1818. Another possible brother Peter Brady married Elizabeth Dufficy so I would be interested in his descendants too. One of Peter Brady's daughters Catherine Brady married Francis Glancy on 20th February 1865 in Elphin Roman Catholic Church.

I live in Sydney Australia. I have an extensive family tree for Matthew Walsh in Australia. He ended up having about 20 children over two marriages altogether. I searched for Killeen/Culleen in modern day Elphin and I think the nearest townland now is Knockcrogherry.

The two townlands are Laghtcausk for the Bradys and either Killeen East or Killeen West for the Walshes. Laughcausk is in Elphin parish while the Killeens are in Shankill parish. If you have access to Google Maps enter Laghtcausk and you will see Killeen East just to the north and Killeen West to the northwest.

the 1856 Griffiths valuation head of household listing for Elphin parish shows a Peter Brady in Laghtcausk who I presume is the brother of Mary.http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/roscommon/elphin.htm

The 1824 Tithe Applotment listing show a Luke Walsh in Killeen East (spelled Cullen and Culleen). http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004625717/004625717_00285.pdf

There were three Brady families in the 1901 census in Laghtcausk www.census.nationalarchives.ie

I did check the online Irish phone book and found this entry.

  • I should have said "Tulsk" not "Tully". We got a researcher from County Roscommon heritage and Genealogy co. Ltd. to search records from Roscommon and she already gave us the records you have very kindly shared from the Griffiths evaluations and the Tithe Applotments. She sent us some parish maps from the Irish Catholic Directory 1988. I expect the boundaries have changed backwards and forwards depending which year you are looking at the map. We were pleased to see on her map of Elphin that Killen East was near Tullyloyd as Matthew Walsh always gave his birthplace as Tully.

Thanks for the phone book entry. Maybe useful if I ever come to Ireland.

  • Hi Linda,

Have just joined this site and stumbled on your post.

My grandfather married Elizabeth clancy  dau of Francis clancy and Elizabeth Brady in 1903.

Unfotunately she died after giving birth to her second child in 1905.

Strangely he went on to marry a Dufficy who would have been related to elizabeth you mention.

My granmother's aunt, Honor Dufficy, also married a Brady, who was possibly related to yuour Bradys.

As far as I know there are no direct Brady descendants remaining in Ireland but I am in contact with the grandson of Eliza clancy who lives in NY state U S A.

Should you wish I suggest we take this off forum and I will give you what information/background that I have.

    My email is duleekman51@gmail.com

Looking forward to hearing from you.

  • My great great great grandfather was John Walsh. He married Brigid Flanagan. They lived in Elphin, Co. Roscommon (looks like Stonepark was one location) and had approximately 5 children: James (1829 - ??), Edward (1831-1895), John (1832-??), Mary (1834-?? - I believe she died prior to the next Mary), Mary 1835-1865 - MY GREAT GREAT GRANDMOTHER - believe she was named after the first Mary), Bridget Walsh (1840-1923), and Eleanor (aka Ellen Jane) (1842-1903). At least 4 children came to the US - Edward, Mary, Bridget and Eleanor. That's about all I have right now. Do you think there may be a connection?

  • I have been trying to find information on Catherine Brady.  She married Patrick Oates in Lockport, NY.  Both were from Roscommon.  I belive that Catherine had a brother, Peter, born in 1848 (based on census records).  There was also an older Dennis Brady (born about 1825) living next door to them in NY.  If Catherine was born in 1837, Dennis could have been an older brother, cousin, or uncle.  The fact that they were all living right next to each other, leads me to believe that they were related. I have no other information about Catherine or her family.  I don't know if that assists you at all, but maybe there is a connection that can be made.

  • That's very interesting and perhaps there is a connection. I looked at your baptism document, thank you very much. I noticed that the first Mary's family's address was Rinuddane, and that place has definitely come up in relation to my search for my Walsh family before. Sorry, I will have to look further for details and get back to you. I notice that an even older Mary Walsh was a sponser on that Mary's baptism, who could have been related to my Matthew Walsh. He didn't have a sister called Mary that I know of, and his mother was Margaret Walsh, nee Flanagan. We think that a Mary Walsh may have been sister of Matthew's father, Luke, and married Peter John Brady, (parents of Mary Brady who married Matthew Walsh, if this is true, he married his first cousin) but this has been mainly conjecture on the part of Australian researchers and has been impossible to find proof for. See above, I think it more likely Peter Brady's wife was Anne Farrell.

Still sometimes Irish women were called Margaret Mary and either first name used interchangeably, I have found.

I will keep your info and see what I can make of it. There is a Flanagan researcher in Australia who I was in touch with a long time ago who may be definitely related to your family. Once again, another detail I will have to look up.

  • I agree they were probably all related. However Roscommon is quite a large County of Ireland and people had very large families in the 19th century so without more detailed info re which townland or parish in Roscommon you think they came from, I can't say whether your Bradys and my Bradys are related. Sorry,

  • Hi Linda - I'm so sorry but I did not see your response in September. Were you able to determine if who the Flanagan researcher was? I would be very interested.

  • Hi Lynn, I emailed Helen, the researcher, before in 2011. Her forebears were Michael Flanagan and Bridget Hogg. This is whatt she wrote about them on a Walsh Genealogy message board:

Michael FLANAGAN b c1803 Elphin Co Roscommon, s/o Thomas FLANAGAN & Bridget LEACH, marr c1828 in Elphin Bridget HOGG b c1808 Elphin, d/o Thomas HOGG & Honora DUIGNAN/DIGNAN.

Michael & Bridget arrived in Sydney NSW AUS on 15 Jan 1840 on 'Crusader' with their children: Thomas c1828, Mary c1832, John c1835, Martin c1837 & settled near Carcoar NSW & had more chn: Catherine b1841, Agnes b1843, Michael b1846 & James b1849. Looking for relatives of these families.

I guess Michael could have been your Brigid's brother. But it's very hard to know. Oh, and our Margaret Flanagan's parents were Patrick Flanagan and Bridget Sharman. A borther of my Margaret Flanagan, Patrick Flanagan came to Australia too on the Crusader in 1840. So maybe he is related to Helen's ancestor. He married Mattha Dufficy. There are not enough Irish records from Elphin available. Irish Roots is the best site but it cost a lot to access the records. Good Luck! This is Helen's email:

  • Just noticed this posting from way back in 2014 so the following details most probably have already been found.

As best as I can make out :

Patrick Flanagan (1798 - 1876) married Martha Dufficy (1802-188) in Roscommon, Ireland and did indeed emigrate to Australia aboard the "Crusader" in 1840. Patrick & Martha wereboth born in Elphin, Roscommon, Ireland

Patrick's parents were Patrick Flanagan & Bridget Sharman.

Martha's parents were Henry Dufficy & Bridget Hagan and her siblings appear to be Thomas, John, Michael, Maurice & Maria with a step brother Patrick. After the passing of Bridget Hagan, Henry, now a widower married Bridget Brady (1824-1912). Bridget Brady (mother of Patrick) passed away on March 12, 1912 in Clooncunny, Roscommon, Ireland.

Patrick Flanagan died on Jan 2, 1876 in Parramatta, NSW, Australia.

Martha died on June 21, 1880 in Sydney, Australia.

They had the following children : Bridget, Mary, Jane, Roderick, Edward, Anne, Charles, Ellen with Joseph and Stephen both passing away on the voyage to Australia aboard the "Crusader".

The story of Roderick Flanagan is fascinating as he was a well known Australian poet who returned to England and died age 34.

  • Hi Terry,

Good to hear from you. Gave up looking for Dufficys some time ago as they were proving very elusive.

Anyway about me. I am the great grandson of Patrick Dufficy referred to abve so we are connnected. My grandmother was Margaret Dufficy and was the second wife of mygrandfather James Carney. His first wife was Elizabeth Clancy ho died after bearing two sons. He later married Margaret Dufficy whom I have since discovered as in fact a cousin of Elizabeths. The connection does not end there as her sister married a Brady.

The only surviving connection to the Clancys that I am familliar with is my [step}cousin in the Usa.

There are still plenty of Dufficys around.

Which of the Dufficys do you descend from?

It may be prudent to take this off this site and reply to my private email which is carney.patrickj@gmail.com

Look forward to hearing from you. Patrick Carney

  • Thanks Terry D for sharing that information,

Though I had been told most of what you say about the Dufficy and Flanagan families, I did not know the earlier details of Henry Dufficy's wives and children.

I too am impressed by Roderick Flanagan who started off apprenticed to a printer and achieved the writing of many poems and much history and journalism.
