Hi, I have just joined the site and looking for information on my ancestors.

My Grandfather Michael Murphy was born in Roxborough 22nd August 1873, christened in Fourmilehouse 7th September 1873. He married Teresa Salmon born in the town of Roscommon on the 15th Febuary 1887, she lived at No2 & No 13 Castle Street, widow of Thomas Scally whom she married in 1911 also, in Roscommon, in 1914, her father was Peter Salmon 1850-1909, her mother was Anne Tighe c1854-1938.

Michaels father was Bernard Murphy c1834 - 1911, his mother Margaret Kilcline c1837-1918, they were married at Ballagh RC Church in August 1870 and lived at House 18 & House 32 Roxborough

My delemma  is this, according to Bernards Marriage Cert he was aged 35 in 1870. but on his death certificate in 1911 he was aged 85, 10 years older than he should have been, there are two Bernards according to the records, one born about 1824, one born 1834, I am trying to establish which is the correct one.   In later life Bernard went by the name of Bryan.

Can anyone out there help?

  • Michael:

I looked at the 1901 and 1911 censuses for Bryan Murphy in Roxborough and the ages shown in 1901 and 1911 (75 and 85) are consistent with the 85 in the 1911 death record. I think he made himself younger when he got married for whatever reason maybe because Margaret was 11 years younger than him.

  • Thanks Roger for your reply, looking at my Gt Grandmother's death certificate again I note they have her age as 90, died 1918, that means she was born in 1828 not 1838 as the marriage cert would have us believe.   I think it may be a case of someone at the time not being very good at arithmatic!!
