My great grandfather, Patrick J. Higgins was born in Ballinagare on 10 July 1861 to Thomas Higgins 1834-94 & Mary Coll 1835-1910.  He was baptised at the Catholic Church in Ballinagare.  His father Thomas went to the U.S. prior to the Civil War, enlisted in the Union Army, & returned to Ireland at the close of the war. Patrick spent the first 18 years of his life on his father's farm then worked on an English farm in Staffordshire.  In April 1881, he sailed from Queenstown to New York on the City of Brussels arriving on 22 April. I am interesting in learning more about the Higgins family & the lifestyle that they experienced.

  • Hi

    Thank you for your message.

You may like to look at a listing for local histories in County Roscommon - you can do so here:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/counties/index.cfm?fuseaction=…

The site is also an excellent resource for BROWSING information on Estate Records, Gravestones, Journals & Directories. It also allows for a surname search where you can check for information about the frequency of the name in the mid-19th century and any other variant spellings of the name.

If you are travelling to County Roscommon - I would suggest a stop at the National Famine Museum.

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you.

Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,
