Hello--

My ancestors hailed from Kilglass and from Clooncoose Tumna.  From Clooncoose: John MCue (1932-1908) and his wife Margaret Kilbane (1835-1908) left this area sometime between 1859 and 1867 for Rutland VT.  Their oldest son, Patrick Henry McCue was born in the Tumna are in 1859. John McCue's parents are Patrick McCue (about 1806-??) and Ann McGuire (1806-1878).  Both of them emigrated to Rutland as well.  The parents of Margaret Kilbane were Thomas Kilbane (1805-?) and Ann Dervin (?-?).  Thomas emigrated to Rutland but we know nothing about Ann Dervin.

In Rutland, these two families then intermarried into other families from I believe closer to Kilglass area. The Rileys were from Legan. I know this from a family tree in the Rutland Historical Society.  James Riley (1829-1896) married Ann McCormack (1842-1924) and both emigrated to Rutland. James' parents were Peter Riley (1800-?) and Mary McGuire (1810-?).  Peter Riley's parents were James Riley (abt 1770-?) and Ellen McGuire (abt 1770-?). The parents of Ann McCormack (1842-1924) from above were John McCormack and Bridget Byrne. All or some of these families came from the Kilglass area and emigrated to Rutland Vermont.

My parents will be visiting Ireland for the first time every this fall (they are SO excited!!).  They will be arriving at Carrick-on-Shannon Sept 13 and staying the evening. They would love to see something of these places...Clooncoose, Legan, Kilglass area in general. Would anyone be able to help them on the ground find these places? Do these family names still have a presence in these areas?

I will post this on the Tumna board as well.

Thank you for any help and advice any one can provide to my parents.

Best always

  • Hi Jeanie,

I just read your post and I was interested in regards to Ann Dervin(?-?)who you have married to Thomas Kilbane (1805-?).

I also have a Ann Dervin/ Derwin who was married Thomas McDonnell and on the birth of my Great Great Grandfathers Thomas birth extract was the following information.

Ann and Thomas McDonnell where married in the Parish of Kilglass in 1834 and had 6 boys and 3 girls deceased.

Based on different Census records in Scotland Thomas was born in Druman Beg somewhere between 1805-1817, but his death extract in 1879 gives his age as 62 years, which made him 17 years old when he married.

The same censuses for Ann are more consistant and her death extract in 1893 gives her age as 74 years given her birth as 1819 in Ballyfeeny

As she was about 10 years younger than Thomas, that would make his birth date as 1809.

Is it possible that we have a connction?

  • Hello John

I don't think we have a direct connectionon on this one. My Ann Dervin married Thomas Kilbane. He eventually emigrated to Rutland VT where he died sometime after 1880.  I am uncertain if Ann Dervin Kilbane emigrated. Thomas lived with his daughter Margaret Kilbane McCue in Rutland.

I think the Kilbanes were from Legan Roscommon.  I would think Ann Dervin is from that location as well.

Did any of your family emigrate to Rutland VT? that is where all my family from Roscommon headed for.

  • Hi Jeanie,

A few years ago I travelled to Kilglass and your parents will absoluety love it as it extremely serene and beautiful place  place.

Unfortunately, I was unable to check any of the church records when there and tried to make a connection with the Parish Preist, without success.

Except for the marriage extract of my great grandparents, I have been unable to find any more information about them in Ireland.

I have also got official records of them, from Scotland where the settled and I am unaware of any the family going to the US, not from lack of trying.

I have tracked my grandmother Catherine Malones family back to Cootehall, Roscommon, Ireland and this is when it becomes quite interesting, to me anyway.

My direct ancestors which I have records for, where Thomas Malone and Catherine Cassidy and she was his second wife.

His first wife who died in Edinburgh Scotland was Bridget McHugh / McCue and they had three children, who emmigrated to Australia.

Bridgets mother was Bridget Brennan who was the second wife of John McHugh / McCue, born abt 1785.

Johns first wife was Catherine Murray, born Abt 1785 in the Parish of Elphin, Boyle, Roscommon and they had a daughter Eleanora.

I thought yo may be interested in this information

  • HMMMMM....that is pretty interesting.  I know of no one in the family in Scotland or Australia but that is because we have never been put onto that trail.  I owe you one.  Thanks a bunch John!

The Roscommon clans who landed in Rutland were WILD let me tell you! I mean seriously rough and tumble.  All of Rutland was I think!

  • Jeanie,

My Kilglass Ancestors (from Ballykilcline) also settled in Rutland, VT.  They were Daniel McGuire (b1800-d1884) and Ann/Nancy Winters (b1815-d1874).  Ann/Nancy was the daughter of Lawrence Winters and Ann/Honora Igo (b1787-d1879).  Ann/Honora also ended up in Rutland.

My great-great grandfather John Christopher McGuire was born in Manchester England in 1850.  Daniel and Ann/Nancy had gone to England after leaving Ireland, before they ended up in Rutland.  (They actually eventually ended up in Mendon.)  John married Margaret Buckley (b1852-d1904).  The McGuires & Buckleys seem to have done a lot of intermarrying.

Anyway, I can't find anything about Daniel McGuire's family.  And I noticed that you had several McGuires in your family desription above...  I wonder if you could help me or if they might be the same family?

    Hope to hear from you,
