I am searching for info on my great grandfather Bernard Pierce.  He was born in Galway Oct. 1, 1864 and went to the United States (Boston) in 1882.  He married Bridget Taylor from County Sligo in the United States in 1885.  They had 10 children (Bernard, Winafred, Mary Verecunda, Mary F. , Joseph Henry, George Francis,  Leo Thomas, Bertha, Matthew Christopher, Matthew Bernard.  I was told he was born in Galway Bay but I do not believe there was a town named Galway Bay so the whereabouts of his birth are unsure.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Civil registration became mandatory in Ireland in 1864 so as this was Bernard?s birth year hopefully you should be able to find his birth record in these records. This should help clarify his place of birth also. Civil registration records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

    http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You can search the indexes to these records at https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

For more information on Irish Civil Registration follow this link:

Have you tried looking into his emigration for more information? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than tha of departure so it may be worth your while looking into it. For immigration records in the US check the National Archives at http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

Do you know Bernard?s father?s name? If you do, you may be able to find record of him in Griffith?s Valuation. This was a property valuation survey carried out in Ireland 1848-1864. It does not give any genealogical information but can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. I did a search for the surname Pierce in Galway and came back with some results. If you can find Bernard?s father here it will give you a parish name. Once you have a parish name you will then be able to look in Church records for information on the family pre-1864. Here is a link to the results:

Some other websites which you may find useful are:

I hope that this is helpful. Remember to post any new information you find. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

  • Hi there, Looking for information for a researcher friend of mine in USA.His name is Bob Sweeney,he is a Researcher and Geniologist himself. He has a Free web site in Sullivan County, which he helps find information on families for Irish Americans on their emigrant ancestors in USA in the Pennsyulvania area. His ancestors are from Kilglass, and I would love to help him find out about them,he has nothing on them at all, just names and dates. Here are the details he has sent me. G G Grandfather Michael Sweeney(1802-1894) Born in Kilglass. His parents Owen and Catherine(Hebrin) Sweeney. Before emigrating he married Catherine Sweeney (1812-1877),they are not closely related, but her family were fishermen on Killala Bay. Michaels brother Martin married Peg Conway(1838) in that area, and they also went to the US.The Conmeys and Sweeneys were very close. Michaels son Owen married Margaret Jordan, born in Sligo. Her parents were Patrick Jordan & Margaret Walsh, from Sligo and Mayo respectively. Michaels son Martin(Bob's Great Grandfather) married Julia Wright from Carne,Sligo, near the border of Mayo. He really would love to know where the Sweeneys lived. If we can get this information,he will know where to visit when he comes to Ireland. So if you could please help him,I would really be happy!!. Thanking you in anticipation. Mary.
