    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Hopefully someone with Madden connections in this area of Roscommon will see your message and post a comment.

Baptismal records for Killukin/Croghan parish start in 1811 but marriage records do not begin until 1825. This explains why I did not see a marriage record for Thomas and Bridget since they likely married in 1819. Since baptismal records start in 1813, you won't find a baptismal record for Thomas or Bridget since they were likely born around 1800 or so as you indicated.

I did find eight baptismal records for their children: John 1820 Mary 1823 Patrick 1825 Honor 1827 (likely died young) Brigid 1830 Thomas 1832 Martin 1837 Honor 1839

  • Check out the 1835 Tithe Applotment Records for the parish of Killukin...

Thomas Madden of 'Boher' (a district along the Carrick-on-Shannon road, as it approaches Croghan village, which referred to a number of townlands, to include Macnadille).

If you are sure your Thomas Madden came from the parish of Killukin/ Croghan, Co Roscommon, then this has to be your man, as there were no Maddens at all on land records in the parish by 1857 (indicating he'd left).  The only other Madden in the parish baptismal records is Anne Madden, wife of Pat Ford (baptising children in 1812 and 1813 in the parish of Croghan).

In 1811 a Daniel Feely (1789-1825) & Bridget Flanagan were baptising in the parish, seeing as he died young, its possible his wife, Bridget Flanagan, married again. It's equally possible there were multiple Bridget Flanagans here.

Flanagan, on the other hand, was a very common name in the parish at that time.  Check out Old Killummod Cemetery, Drumlion Cemetery and Estersnow Cemetery for FLANAGAN gravestones. In the townland of Killummod you have a Bernard Ward & Catherine Flanagan, and a Pat Mulvey & Ann Flanagan baptising children in 1815. In 1816 a Pat  & Rose Flanagan of Culleenatreen were baptising children.

Catherine Flanagan (1785-1822) lived in Cashell (a district along the Croghan to Carrick on Shannon road, as it approaches Carrick) possibly in the townland of Carroward or close to it. In 1857, you will find a Pat Flanagan on land records for Drishoge (farm #4) and for Knockacorha (farm #8) and for Ardlavagh (farm #9).  And an Edward FLanagan in Carrowmore (farm #20). Only the Pat Flanagan of Ardlavagh appears on the tithe applotment records of 1835 (with 2 acres of 3rd class land).

Best of luck with your search!

  • NOTE: Killukin (Roscommon) is not the correct civil parish for the Catholic Parish of Croghan aka Killukin, the civil parish you need is Killukin (Boyle)

  • Can you tell me where the Madden family may have migrated from in Ireland to this area? I am having difficulty pinning down Thomas's fathers name. What were the naming practices in Ireland in those times?

Where would they have left from to immigrate to Canada? Their intentions were to go to America but were sent to Ontario instead. Do you have to see a Michael Madden that could have been born about the same time as Thomas?

I cannot find ship info during those years.

Thank you so much for all the info. I am excited to find them in Killukin.

  • Roger: Not living there, but know it well.

Debi:  What exact place of origin information do you have on them? Any mention of the parish of Killukin? Or just "Co Roscommon"?

Roscommon  immigrants typically began their long journey from Irish ports in Dublin, and Silgo. The Mahon Estate tenants, for example walked all the way to Dublin port, bound for Canada.

You can find a guide on ships to Canada here.

Unfortunately, before 1865 there are few passenger lists for immigrants coming to Canada. However, sources such as the Filby's phenomenal Passenger and Immigrant List Index (available on Ancestry.com) can help to fill the void. Library and Archives Canada also has a useful webpage about immigration before 1865.

  • First, check out FamilySearch.org for a Thomas Madden & Brigid Flanagan baptising:

John Madden baptised 06 Aug 1820  in the parish of Killukin (Boyle) by Thomas Madden & Brigid Flanagan

Patt Madden baptised 28 Aug 1825 in the parish of Killukin (Boyle) by Thomas Madden & Brigid Flanagan

Honora Madden baptised 23 Dec 1827 in the parish of Killukin (Boyle) by Thomas Madden & Brigid Flanagan

Bridget Madden Jr. baptised 28 Jan 1830 in the parish of Killukin (Boyle) by Thomas Madden & Brigid Flanagan

Thomas Madden Jr. baptised 29 Dec 1832 in the parish of Killukin (Boyle) by Thomas Madden & Brigid Flanagan

Martin Madden baptised 06 Dec 1837 in the parish of Killukin (Boyle) by Thomas Madden & Brigid Flanagan

Anna baptised 28 Apr 1839 in the parish of Killukin (Boyle) by Thomas Madden & Brigid Flanagan

As far as naming practices were concerned, especially in this parish, typically the first sone was named after the father's father, and the first daughter after the mother's mother. Problem is, without a marriage record, and with so many gaps in records, one can't be sure if the first children are actually among the names showing up on records.  For example, the gap between John Madden (b. 1820) and Patt (b.1825) is too big. Generally the first 3 babies would be all born within a year of each other, then the couple would slow down to a chiod every 2 years... spanning a healthy marriage of 28 years... could be approx 14 children. Also, when a baby died, the name was given to the next child born, to keep it alive. Rather confusing!

Second... look up each each of these records up on the NLI Parish Registers for Croghan and note the names of the godparents for each baptism (above)

    for example:

John Madden baptised 06 Aug 1820 (godparents: John Flanagan & Maria Flanagan)

This will tell you the names of all of Thomas Madden & Brigid Flanagan's siblings and siblings-in-law)

With that list of godparents, I might be able to spot a pattern, and take you back a bit further to find out who Thomas Madden's father was. Sometimes, searching the records of a younger sibling will turn up the names of the parents, a townland etc in records after 1865. You may just get lucky.
