GREETINGS FROM ONTARIO, CANADA
My GGG Grandfather William Gilhuly (b. 1804) was born in County Roscommon according to his tombstone in Ontario, Canada.
He settled in Ontario in 1828 according to land patent records in Canada.
I would estimate the birth year of the father of Wiilliam Gilhuly (1804) would be
about 1774.
I have never found any records in Ireland for William Gilhuly.
I also have two DNA Matches that point
to GILHOOLEYS in KILRONAN in ROSCOMMON. I however cannot make an exact connection.
These point to the Gilhulys possibly in Roscommon in the Lough Allen area - southwest end.
I dont no where to start when I look in Griffiths Valuation. There are so many Gilhooleys/Gilhulys and many other variations on the surname.
I dont find any references to the name in the Tithe Applotments.
I also would like to know when the registration of births, marriages and deaths started in Kilronan Parish.
My GG Grandfather in Ontario changed the family surname about 1860 from GILHULY to GILHULA due to mail mixups.
I thank you in advance for all advice and/or pointing me in the direction of new sources.

Diane:
Records for Kilronan RC parish start in October 1823 for marriages and January 1824 for baptisms. There are no death records for Kilronan RC parish. Only two RC parishes have records back to 1804 and earlier- Boyle and Athlone.
I did find some Gilhooly Tithe records.

I now know the Gilhoolys/Gilhooleys were from Townland Lurgan in Kilronan Parish because of my DNA Matches. I however cant find the Lurgan part of the Tithe Applotments. There must have been a name change.
In the Tithe Applotments provided in the above reply from 2021 Andrew Gilhooly was listed as living in a Townland I dont recognize. By the time of Griffiths Andrew was living in Townland Lurgan with other Gilhoolys - Patrick, Patrick Jr., Thomas and Timothy.
Were boundaries and names changed by Griffiths in 1858?

Hi Diane!
When the Tithe Applotment listings were generated, there were no official townlands in Ireland. Just place names. The 1851 census standardized townland names I have a resource book titled " General Alphabetical Index to the Townlands and Towns, Parishes and Baronies of Ireland". The index indicates the townlands were based on the 1851 census.
In any event, I see 22 Gillooly Tithe records in Kilronan parish indlcuidn your Andrew. It looks like Greagh Guihen was renamed Lurgan for official purposes like the Griffiths.

There are ten or so entries for Gillooly in the Tithe Applotments for Townland Greagh Guihen.
Pat Gillooly has twelve units of land whereas the others have 2, 3 or 5.
I also cannot read the whole entry for Pat Gillooly. Do you understand what the end of the entry says? And what does it mean?
Would it be a reasonable hypothesis that Patrick was possibly the Father of most of the others listed.
Several DNA Matches have led me to this Townland where I feel my Gilhuly Ancestors were from.

Diane:
Just because Pat Gillooly has 12 acres would not lead me to conclude that he was the father of most of the other Gilloolys. I do note that entry 8 shows Pat and Patrick Gillooly so I would surmise that Patrick was the son of Pat.
The last part of the entry indicates how much tithe tax was due to the Church of Ireland Vicar. Pat Gillooly's tax was 5 shillings and 8 3/4 D which stands for denarius or penny.
