My ggggrandmother, Margaret Finnegan (maiden name possibly Rogers) born approximately 1841 is found on the 1901 Ireland Census: Residents of a house 3 in Lisnagroob (Kiltullagh, Roscommon) widowed, along with her 2 sons and granddaughter.
Margaret's daughter, my gggrandmother, Mary Finnegan born approximately 1870. She married Thomas Bostock (b: 1866). Their daughter, Elizabeth Bostock, was baptised on 29 August 1891 in Parish of Kiltullagh (County Roscommon) - Certificate of Baptism is attached.
In 1910 Mary Bostock (nee Finnegan) is on a passenger list to Nova Scotia with Elizabeth and siblings. Elizabeth married William McGrath in 1911 and they lived Colliers Newfoundland. I believe Mary Bostock (nee Finnegan) was buried in Nova Scotia Canada. Not sure about much in between.
I recently connected with a distant cousin on the Finnegan line via ancestry who lives in Massachusetts - he indicated that I should have many relatives still living in Roscommon but I haven't been able to reach him again.
Any info or suggestions of where to look for information would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Sharon Gilbert

Hi Sharon, Roger has been in touch with me re your enquiry. The following graveyard inscription is on Find my past website. It also has a picture of the headstone . The graveyard is one of the prittiest and most scenic for many miles around. It is a must on your visit if visiting Ireland though you will have to be able to climb a relatively steep hill. The inscription reads:-
In Loving Memory of,
Michael Finnegan,
Lisnagroobe,
Died December 26th 1943
Aged 80 Years,
His Wife Winifred
Died February 2nd 1956
Aged 78 Years,
Their Son Michael
Died March 19th 1987
Aged 70 Years.
May I also suggest that you drop a post card to the Postmistress, Cloonfad P.O. (Post Office), Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo, Ireland. Attach the details of the inscription and she will know who you are referring to. She may even be connected. It is a relatively small community. Unfortunately I am living at the other side of the country and I do not specifically know of this family.
From Find my Past Website other children of Margaret and John Finnegan were Michael 1863, Margaret 1866, Winny, 1869 and Austin 1872. The Michael 1863 is the man whose details appear on the above inscription.and also matches up with hte 1901/1911 census information.
while my information is derived from my records I would like to stress that the most accurate information in your case is likely to come from writing to Cloonfad P.O.
Martin.

Martin,
Thank you so much for the above information. I've had limited time using Find My Past at a local (US) genealogy center and didn't have much luck but am thinking a short-term subscription is in my future. This headstone and Finnegan family information you have provided gives me a renewed energy to trace my family history. I am hopeful that a trip to Ireland will happen in the next couple of years - especially now that I have a special place to visit... up a relatively steep hill.
Also, I intend to write to the Postmistress this week and will include the inscription.
Again, thank you so much Martin. I sincerely appreciate your time in providing this information. If there is anything in the US I can assist with, please do not hesitate to ask.

Martin,
I hope this finds you well. Somehow time has escaped me. I googled and found the Postmistress information, found her on Facebook and have sent her a message.
Thank you again for your assistance.

Hi Sharon,
This is a bit of a long shot but I thought you might like to see this image which was taken in the townland of Spring Gardens, Granlahan in the 1920's/30's
It feature some of my family together with other who lived in the same townland including some Rogers family. I'm having some difficulty uploading the picture. So if you cannot open it please feel free to drop me an email and I send it again with pleasure
