I am researching my family tree and looking for information about my family who lived in and some still living in Clogher, Upper, Roscommon.
My Grandfather was John Maloney who died abt 1948 and my Grandmother was Catherine Cunningham from Williamstown.
They had six children; Michael b 1897, John (Sonny) b 1899, Pat b 1902, Mae b 1904, Martin b 1908 and my Mother Catherine (Kate) Ellen b 1910.
I would be very grateful for any information or memories that people would be prepared to pass on.
Many thanks
Winst

Looks like your grandfather's name was James and your great-grandfather was John. See the 1901 and 1911 census records below. The surname spelling in 1901 was Molloney and in 1911 Moloney.

  • Hello Winst.  I see that you wrote your post about 10 years ago so I'm very late seeing it!  I am interested in any information about the Maloneys of Clogher (Upper or Lower).  In fact, I am researching links with Tullys in this area. I see that there was a John Tully in Clogher in 1832 (Tithes) but no longer there in 1856 or any time after that I know of. (It's possible that this is my Tully family who migrated a little west to Co Mayo. The family story is that this family came from Co Roscommon.)

I have a DNA link with a descendant of Catherine Mullowney (from Lowberry, just across the road from Clogher Upper) who married Patrick McGuire (from Ballykilleen) in 1873 in Granlahan Church.  Her father was James Mullowney who died in 1869 (Lowberry) and her mother was Anne Blighe.  Catherine's brother or cousin, Patrick Mullowney (wife Ellen McGuire) was living in house no. 28, Clogher Upper, in 1901.

I was very interested to find a marriage in 1852 of a Thomas Mullowney + Mary Tully (I found birth/bap. records for 3 of their children:  Patrick, Margaret, and James, addresses are Clogher and Lowberry).  However, I haven't been able to establish a definite link between this Mullowney-Tully marriage and the Catherine and Patrick Mullowney previously referred to (who I have a DNA link with).  Catherine's great-granddaughter lives in the US and she gave me the information about the Mullowney/McGuire marriages and about Cath Mullowney being from a family who lived at Lowberry Cross (the crossroad).

I have tried to give just essential information to keep this clear.  I would love to know if you have any ideas about how these Mullowneys were related (and possibly related to your family there), and who the family of Mary Tully was.

You may already know this, but I found that the widower John Malloney (age 70) (1901 census, House no. 31, Clogher Upper) was married to Mary Stritch and she would apparently be your great-grandmother.

Hoping to hear from you.  Sincerely, Cindy
