My third great grandmother Bridget Beirne got married in this parish in 1841 to Michael Dowling of Ballykilleen in Mayo. Her home town is listed as Marlfield. Does anybody know if that is the English translation of Gortamarle? Additionallt are there any Beirne families still in the area?

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I'm not a Gaelic scholar but Gort means field so I think you are correct. I did check the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kiltullagh civil parish and there were no Beirne's listed but there were Burns and Byrne records but none in Gortamarle

I also checked the Griffiths Valuation for Ballykilleen townland in Annagh civil parish in Mayo not far from Kiltullagh. There was a Bernard Dowlan and a Michael Dowlan listed in Ballykilleen.

The 1901 census for Ballykilleen did not show and Dowlan or Dowling families. Sane with Beirne/Burns/Byrne families in Gortamarle.

  • Marlfielf was also noted in 1841 for an Ann Flynn on her Marriage record?

There are three birth records for Martin Moran and Sarah Rodgers in the 1840s Two are noted as the townland of Curragh and the 3rd as Marlfield. Curragh is adjacent to Gortamarle. I feel you can be confident that Gortamarle is an alternative/Irish name for Marlfield. The townland is commonly referred to as Parke today.

If you drop me an email I will try and faciliate making a contact with a lady who lives in Lavallyroe whose maiden name was Beirne, She is well in her 80s now and may well be able to help you in your family research.

A John Dowling ( A very keen genealogist)  lived in the townland of Ballyglass Middle but he passed last year.

Hello again! I wanted to message you because I figured you could assist but I did not have your e-mail. My old PC crashed in March and I lost all my e-mails.

What year is the Griffins evaluation that lists Michael Dowlan. Bridget Dowling, my 2 great grandmother, got married in 1871 and lists Ballykilleen as her hometown and Michael as her father. I also have parish records showing Michael Dowling and Bridget Bierne having children baptized throught he 1840's and 1850's. Lastly, Bridget and her husband Patrick Comer had their first child baptized in Oct. 1872 and the parish register lists their home as Ballykilleen. Do you think the spelling Dowlan is just a transcription error?

The Griffiths Valuation survey for Roscommon was conducted around 1855. The spelling of surnames was not always exact and the surveyors spelled the names as best as they could understand. Many of the farmers leasing land could not read or write.
