Hello, I have been searching for Tully ancestors who were supposed to have migrated from Co Rosc to Co Mayo, probably between 1833 and 1853. The principle names I've been looking for are Owen, Patrick, John, and Bartly. However, there were also James, Michael and Luke in the family.
I have found a James Tully in the Tithe Books, 1832, listed as in Cashel, Kilkeevin parish, Co Rosc. However, I can't find this townland listed as existing in Kilkeevin parish on any site. I saw Cashel townlands in Kiltullagh, Kilronan, and Kilcorkey parishes. Why is there no Cashel listed in Kilkeevin parish? I have double-checked this Tithe Book listing (didn't look at the copy of the original however).
Could you please help me out with this?
Thank you very much!

As you pointed out, the 1851 Index to Townlands lists Cashel townlands in Kiltullagh, Kilronan and Kilcorkey parishes but not Kilkeevin. However, the Cashel townland in Kiltullagh is very close to the border with Kilkeevin parish. Possibly, the borders of the two parishes were slightly different in 1832 which explains why the Tithe record showed Kilkeevin parish.
Just a thought.

Hello Roger,
Thank you for your response. I have tried finding some information about any changes in the borders(Kilteevin/Kiltullagh parishes) but haven't found anything specific yet.
Do you know where I might find this border changing information?
Thank you very much.

Cindy:
I don't have any documentation. Cashel is very close to the Kiltullagh/Kilkeevin parish border which is why I believe the 1832 Cashel is the townland now in Kiltullagh parish.

Hi
Cashel does now seem to be listed in the Parish of Kiltullagh.

You would be hard pressed I'd think to find any border changing information - It may just have been a decision made or something way back when and the townland was taken in by Kiltullagh. Luckily Kiltullagh records start early (off the top of my head, sometime in the 1830s) so its all the better for you.
You find that townlands that straddle borders are sometimes recorded in one and later in another, probably a natural part of changing administration. Over time church parishes sometimes divide and sometimes come together depending on population, priest availability, diocesan decisions etc. You should probably concentrate your searches on both places just to be sure, so that if you are not finding anything its because they are not there rather than a question of you not looking in the right place, if that makes sense!

Dear Mrs Boyle,
Thank you for your helpful information. I will leave it at that. Cashel does not seem to be on the border of Kilkeevin to me (2 or 3 townlands away), but never mind. iI works fine for me that way! Perhaps the Ordnance Surveyors made a mistake putting it in Kilveevin back in 1832!
Sincerely,
Cindy

There is an early Kiltullagh marriage record for a Thomas Tully who married a Margaret Keaveny Jan 24th 1822. Present were Patrick Tully and Patrick Keaveny. No townland is given.
A Lord Dilon map of March 1849 of Corraun townlnd viewable in the National Library of Ireland has a Patrick Tully in possession of 1 Acre and 20 perches of land. While the holding was small it had a Mill and Corn Kiln marked on the map. A stream ran by the border of his holding. The side the mill was located on was in Co. Mayo the other side of the small stream was in Co. Roscommon. By the time of the Griffiths in 1856 the Tully name was gone from this townland. A Tully family lives about 4 kilometers further into Mayo today in the townland of Cornacarta. Both this townland and Corraun (pronounced locally as Gurrane) are in Annagh parish. A Barthemelew lived in Cornacarta at one stage. You can google Tulrahan cemetery to find some further information.
For early records in Kiltullagh Parish you can acquire baptismal records in irishroots.ie for he following Tullys with father's names - John, Michael, Owen, and Patrick.
I am not sure if this is information you are looking for but it might be helpful.

Hello,
Thank you very much for your very helpful message! You are right in suggesting the connection to Cornacarta. I should have mentioned that this is in fact the townland where my grandfather , Austin Tully was born in 1870. However, his father (Patrick and grandfather - also Patrick), came there from Co Rosc together with a brother of one of these Patricks between 1833 - 1856. The brother's name was probably Bartly. I don't know if he would be the son or brother of Patrick Sr. There was also a John Tully in the group. The 1st son of Patrick Jr. was named Owen.
The idea of the Patrick Tully with a mill is very interesting. However, these men were farmers so I don't know if that fits with this.
I would like to find the baptismal records you spoke of as being on irishroots.ie. However, I have gone on this site and I can't find my way to baptismal records, only to the message board area. Could you give me any advice about this?
I have also seen Owen Tullys in Templetogher and Dunmore parishes in Co Galway. Since the story passed down in the family says that the brothers moved from Co Rosc to Cornacarta (Mayo), I don't know if I should be pursuing these other Co Galway Tullys or not!
Thank you so much for your help. Looking forward to hearing from you again.

Hello,
I know many people who live in an area called Arm Cashel. I believe people used to simply call it Cashel. It was named after the cashel or ringfort in the area. On Google Maps they refer to it as Arm but used to also call it Kilkelly Road. It's just outside Castlerea near Clonalis House if that helps. The Tithe Applotment Books may refer to a different place but that's what I know and it is in the parish of Kilkeevin.
