Will be in the Roscommon area within the next week. Here from US looking for my family roots. Found the marriage records of my great grandparents Thomas Casserly and Brigidam Corcoran. The record show they were married on February 20, 1843. They had a son, John, that left Ireland on April 12, 1872. I believe he was born in 1851. Does this connect with anyone. Would love to find a record of his birth and if he had any siblings.

  • The Griffiths Valuation survey was conducted in Co. Roscommon in 1855-1856. There was a Thomas Casserly listed in Culleenanory townland, Lissonuffy parish and I assume he was your great-grandfather.

The 1901 census for Culleenanory shows a Bridget Casserly age 70, a widow, with an unmarried daughter and a married daughter. There is a good chance that this Bridget was the wife of Thomas.

The 1911 census does not show any Casserlys but there is a Thomas Kerins and his wife Mary who are believe are the son in law and daughter from the 1901 census.

It would appear that the children of Thomas and Bridget were born before 1864 when civil registration started. There are some Church records available for that time period. You can visit a Mormon Family History Center and order microfilm from Salt Lake City. www.familysearch.org  See link below.

  • Thanks so much. Do you live in the area? My sister and I are in Ireland for the next week and want to travel to our ancestor's home land. QhIs Castlemore a location? Would that be a good place to look for more information?

  • I live in Maryland.Castlemore is a parish in northwest Roscommon which includes the town of Ballaghaderreen.

Culleenanory is on the east side of Co. Roscommon not far from the Co.Longford border. I assume you have a car.

If you get to the town of Roscommon, go east on the N63 towards Ballyleague and the Longford town of Lanesborough. Before you get to the River Shannon and Lanesborough you want to take the R371 road northeast for about five miles to Culleenanory.

  • We will be in that area. I will post when we are close. Is there a cemetery that we should look in for Thomas Casserly. Did they record deaths.

  • I would contact the Catholic church in Strokestown to see if they can provide any info on where Thomas would be buried.
