Name:   Mary ( or Moria/ Mary) Kelly

Birth date:   October 11, 1868

Birth place:   County Roscommon, Ireland (Parish unknown)

Father:   John Kelly

Mother:   Mary O'Neill

Oral family history says that her father, John Kelly, was at one time the mayor of his town.  Also, that she emigrated with her sister.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked on Roots Ireland from 1863-1873 in Co. Roscommon and they did not have any baptismal/birth records for a Mary/Maria Kelly with a father John Kelly and a mother Mary O'Neill. As you likely know, Mary Kelly is a very common name in Roscommon. There were 21 civil births for a Mary Kelly in 1868 in Co. Roscommon.

    Any other information?

  • Afraid not, other than the oral family history aboiut her father, John, being a public official (e.g. mayor).   Might Mary have actually been her middle name?  Is it possible to search just by birth date and gender?

You can't search by birth date and gender. Are you sure the mother's maiden name was O'Neill?

I live in Maryland but have Roscommon/mayo roots. I was in Ireland in September and will likely go back again next year.

  • My info is all coming from her death certificate: I got a copy from our City Hall.  My grandmother supplied the info (for her mother) to the funeral director.  I also remember that my grandmother said that her grandmother's (Mary 's mother's) maiden name was Reilly (Riley?).  Could those two names be switched/confused? She also had said that her mother emigrated from County Mayo.

  • Morning

Thanks for the above Roger. As a long shot and if all else fails you could contact the Roscommon Local History Library. Roscommon used to have an archivist in charge of the Local Authority (Corporation) records but I believe that is no longer the case. You could contact the Librarian though, who may have access to the records of the Authority in relation to the Mayoral aspect of your family oral history. Again, a long shot but you never know! Often times oral histories do have a grain of truth but the older they are the more difficult to prove.

  • Thank you so very much for your suggestion. I will try that, as I have spent 3 weeks trying in vain to locate my family.

Since you now believe that Mary's mother's maiden name was Reilly or a variant, I searched Roots Ireland in Roscommon and Mayo from 1863-1873. Unfortunately, Roots had no record for a Mary Kelly with father John and mother Mary Reilly in thos two counties.

  • Again, I thank you so very much...I'm more than a little baffled by this.  My original maternal info was:

Reilly mothered O'Neill, who  mothered Kelly.

I'm afraid I'm grasping at straws, but took the advice from Clare Doyle from this site and e-mailed the librarian, hoping to find John Kelly as a public official.
