I am searching for the parish of my great-great-grandmother MARIA BARLOW. She emigrated to Canada around 1840 and her sister ANNIE BARLOW came over sometime after that. They lived out their lives in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. MARIA was supposedly born in 1834 and her parents were John Barlow and ? Collins as far as we have been told. The town she was from may have been called something like Menoch. (sp?) I would be interested in hearing from any Barlows who think this information may fit in with their family. Maria did not come to Canada with her parents to our knowledge, which leads me to believe her parents may have died young or her mother died and she was given up for some reason. She married my great-great-grandfather, B.D. Voisard, around 1854. Thanks for reading!

  • Oh yes, and my grandmother always said MARIA BARLOW was from Roscommon.

  • Lynn:

I checked the Roots Ireland indexes and found an 1840 baptismal record for a Mary Barlow in the Castlerea RC church records. Parents were  John and Mary. No idea if this record is for your ancestor. Keep in mind, a good number of parishes do not have records back to 1840.

Roots is a subscription site. Next summer the National Library plans to put the RC parish registers online for free searching.

I could not find a townland anywhere called Menoch.

  • Hello Roger,

Thank you for checking in the baptismal records! She was definitely called Maria, pronounced Mar-eye-a, and her tombstone says born in 1834. The Canada Census of 1881 says she emigrated in 1840. I can only assume these dates are correct or close to correct. Her first child was born around 1855, so I can quite certainly say that this Mary is not my ancestor......but could be a cousin of course, or even a sister born after she left Ireland? Was the mother's maiden name Collins? That will be great when the records go online. The name Menoch is on the census but is really hard to read, maybe Marroch, Marnoch? I guess for now, her Irish origins are still a mystery! Thanks again, Lynn

  • ANNIE CATHERINE BARLOW was born in Ireland in 1847 according to her death certificate from St. Catharines, Ont., Canada in 1933. Her father is listed as John Barlow but there is not name listed for her mother. ( I am not sure if she had the same mother as MARIA given the difference in age.) Sadly, there is no mention of a city or county name.

  • Thank you Roger. Any record of her sister Annie Catherine being born in 1847?

  • Hi again,
I have found a record for the marriage of a John Barlow whose father was also John. I found it on ancestry.ca. John Barlow Jr. married Mary Kelly on Jan. 28, 1869 in Glenamaddy, Galway, which I can see is not far from Roscommon but in County Galway. He was born in 1845 which could make him a younger brother of Maria and Annie. I have joined that parish now too and will see if I can find anyone there who knows more about this Barlow family. I am thinking that maybe Maria always said she was from Roscommon because that was the closest large town to her home. I have no idea how common the BARLOW name is there, but I imagine it is quite common. Still digging!

  • Lynn:

Roots has an 1844 record for Anne Barlow parents John and Catherine. Collins does not work as the mother's maiden name but sometimes the maiden name is not shown. The record was in the Kilbegnet/Ballynakill RC church.

  • I suppose that could be her, really no way to tell for sure I guess. She may have had a different mother. I have no idea how or why Maria Barlow came to Canada so young. Her mother may very well have died and her father sent her off? She would have been about 7 if the census records are correct. I would be more inclined to think that she came in 1850 at the age of 16, as she married about 1853 I believe. Lynn

  • I have made a little progress. Maria's mother was Catherine Collins from Kilteevan or Killucan and her father was James or John  Barlow from Cloontuskert or Coolshaghtena area. Still no birth records for either but DNA matches have helped quite a bit. Still hoping to conect with other Barlow descendants in Ireland!
